Air Canada CEO to step down after backlash over his English-only crash message

0

Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau said he will retire later this year, days after drawing criticism for an English-only condolence message following this month’s deadly crash in New York.

Canada’s largest airline, based in French-speaking Quebec, said Rousseau, who is 68, told the board he will leave by the end of September. Air Canada, which is required by law to offer flight service in both English and French, said it will search for a new CEO who has “the ability to communicate in French.”

The crash occurred on March 22, when an Air Canada Jazz flight from Montreal arrived at New York’s LaGuardia Airport and collided with a fire-and-rescue vehicle on a runway. The plane’s two pilots were killed in the crash. They were Antoine Forest, a French-speaking Quebecer, and Mackenzie Gunther, a graduate of Toronto’s Seneca Polytechnic.

After the crash, Rousseau delivered his condolence video message in English, with French subtitles.

Canada is an officially bilingual nation, and Prime Minister Mark Carney had said the English-only message showed a lack of compassion and judgment. Quebec’s premier and others called on the airline executive to resign, while the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages has received hundreds of complaints.

Steven MacKinnon, Canada’s transport minister, thanked Rousseau in a social media post and said the government will continue to work closely with Air Canada to ensure it “provides safe, reliable, affordable and bilingual service to all Canadians.”

Quebec Premier François Legault noted that when Rousseau was appointed president of the airline in February 2021, he promised to learn French. Before serving as Air Canada’s CEO, Rousseau had worked as the airline’s deputy CEO and chief financial officer.

Quebec’s identity has been contentious since the 1760s, when the British completed their takeover of what was then called New France. Quebec is about 80% French-speaking.

FUNEBRARUM Returns With Devastating New Single, Announces First New Full-Length Since 2009

0

New Jersey death metal lifers Funebrarum have announced their long-awaited third full-length album, Beckoning the Void of Eternal Silence, set to arrive on May 29 via Pulverised Records.

Marking their first new material in seven years, the record sees the underground stalwarts return with what’s being billed as their most fully realized and crushing work to date – a release that doubles down on their reputation as torchbearers of cavernous, doom-laden death metal rooted firmly in the late-’80s and early-’90s tradition.

Commenting on the album, the band said: “We, Funebrarum are stoked to be sharing our third offering, Beckoning the Void of Eternal Silence with the world. We are proud of the work overall and the final result. We look forward to desecrating stages worldwide with the new material.”

Formed in 1999, Funebrarum carved out a devoted following with early releases Beneath the Columns of Abandoned Gods and The Sleep of Morbid Dreams, before re-emerging in 2015 with a refreshed lineup and the Exhumation of the Ancient EP.

After years of writing across continents – and a pandemic-era pause – the band now return with a record tracked between Portland, Oregon and Edison, New Jersey, alongside engineer Steven Di Acutis, capturing their signature suffocating atmosphere at its most ominous.

To mark the announcement, the five-piece have unveiled the first taste of the album with new single “Anhela Odor Mortuorum (The Adepts)”. In short, it’s a fucking killer.

Speaking about the track, the band added: “‘Anhela Odor Mortuorum (The Adepts)’ is a track we completed while on tour in Mexico several years ago. The song was written, mostly, by our bassist, Winslow. It is a great track that we enjoy playing live. It outlines the ancient journey of an occultist deep in connection to and in contemplation of, the shadowed mysteries.”

Packers’ Matt LaFleur mulls low survey grade, cites need to grow ‘connection’ with players

0

PHOENIX — As grateful as he is to be back for an eighth season as the Green Bay Packers coach and with a contract extension to boot, Matt LaFleur said he’s aware of the issues that have prevented his team from making a Super Bowl run despite three straight playoff appearances and six in his seven seasons.

Speaking Monday for the first time since signing his extension in January after the Packers’ wild-card loss to the Chicago Bears — one of several games last season in which they blew late leads — LaFleur did not duck the low grade he received in the NFLPA’s annual player survey but explained why he thinks he might have been one of only six coaches to receive lower than a B.

LaFleur received a B-minus after getting an A-minus the previous year. According to the survey, which was not supposed to be made public this year but was obtained by ESPN and other media outlets, some players dinged LaFleur when it came to “respect for players.”

“I don’t feel that way, but unfortunately some guys did,” LaFleur said at the NFL annual meetings. “That tells me I’ve got to do a better job of communicating. It goes back to the relationship piece. I think it’s so critical. We always talk about connected teams are powerful teams, and we have to grow that connection.

“Certainly that’s been a topic of conversation within our building of — how do we get these guys a little closer? Because the more they know each other, I think the more they’re going to battle for one another.”

After a 9-3-1 start in 2025, the Packers lost their last five games, finishing as the No. 7 seed in the NFC for the third straight season. They have won only one playoff game in that stretch, have not won the NFC North since 2021 and have not played in the NFC Championship Game since consecutive appearances in the 2019 and 2020 seasons, LaFleur’s first two in Green Bay.

Earlier this offseason, general manager Brian Gutekunst, who also received a contract extension from team president Ed Policy, said the Packers must find a way to finish games next season.

“Yeah, that’s been on the forefront of mind,” LaFleur said. “I think it definitely starts with the mentality but it’s got to be in everything we do from as soon as we get on the grass, and whether it’s individual, there’s got to be a start and finish to every drill, and I think it’s got to be constantly on our mind because that is the one thing that we did not do last year. We lost way too many games late in the game where we had leads or just had opportunities to close people out, and we didn’t get it done.”

There were myriad factors — including Micah Parsons‘ season-ending knee injury in Week 15 — that contributed to Green Bay’s demise, but LaFleur said “the buy-in [from players] is going to be absolutely critical.”

“If I’m being honest about it, I think there were some guys that were upset about roles last year, and I think that took a toll on our football team,” LaFleur said.

“I think from a coaching standpoint, role clarity is key. So we’ve got to obviously do a better job communicating with our players, ‘Hey here’s your role and if you’re unhappy about your role, it’s on you to do something about that, to carve out a role on this football team.’ But yeah, the buy-in is absolutely critical. Getting guys in there that are juiced and ready to go to work each and every day is going to be critical for us.”

LaFleur would not say whether some of those players are no longer on the team but when asked whether that might have contributed to his low mark, he said: “I’m sure that had something to do with it.”

The survey was conducted late in the season, and it’s possible the Packers’ losing streak contributed to the low marks for LaFleur.

“Certainly you don’t want to just dismiss that stuff,” LaFleur added. “You’ve got to look into it.”

As for his contract extension, terms of which remain unknown, LaFleur said he was “ecstatic” to be back with the Packers.

“I was confident in what we’ve been able to do,” LaFleur said. “Certainly, are we satisfied? Hell no. Not even close. We always want more. Until you’re hoisting that Lombardi [Trophy], you’re not going to be satisfied and even then you’re going to want to do it again. I’m certainly grateful of the opportunity. I love this organization, the city, the people, the community but I love our players, too. Going to work with Jordan Love every day is a pretty cool deal. I think he’s an unbelievable quarterback but an even better guy.”

Chile’s president vows tougher school security following recent stabbing and firearms incidents

0

SANTIAGO, Chile — President José Antonio Kast said Monday that his administration will tighten security measures at Chile’s schools, following two incidents involving weapons and amid growing concern about school violence in the South American country.

The announcement follows a deadly attack Friday that left one dead and four wounded. The pledge also came on the same day that another student was detained while attempting to enter a school with a loaded firearm.

“We are going to have to take certain measures to protect our students,” Kast said at an event at a school in the capital, Santiago. “These measures, which were previously met with strong resistance, now need to be viewed differently. Society has changed.”

Last Friday, an 18-year-old student carried out a knife attack at a school in northern Chile, killing a 59-year-old school inspector and stabbing four other people, including another staff member and three students.

One of the victims remains hospitalized in critical condition, while the attacker remains in custody.

The attack is considered one of the worst cases of school violence in Chile.

Kast, leader of the Chilean far right who took office in early March, said that “the events that shock us all continue to occur,” referring to Monday’s incident, when a 15-year-old tried to enter a school carrying a loaded gun.

“Today, once again, a student was found in a school with an object capable of harming other children,” he said.

Kast announced that his government will seek to implement “measures for greater control over access to schools,” without providing further details.

Education Minister María Paz Arzola said that her office is drafting a bill that would allow teachers to inspect students’ backpacks. She also said that the government will work to expedite the implementation of metal detectors at schools.

The teenager who was arrested by the police on Monday had tried to enter a school in the city of Curicó, about 200 kilometers (125 miles) south of Santiago, with a gun and ammunition tucked into his waistband.

“Police arrived at the scene… they detained the minor, the weapon was seized, and they proceeded with the arrest,” Maj. Juan Díaz Serrano, of Chile’s police force, told reporters, adding that the student did not make any threats and did not “pull out the weapon to intimidate any staff member or classmate.”

While armed attacks remain rare in Chile, the nation’s high schools and universities have a storied history of activism. During the major social upheavals of 2011 and 2019, students adopted a confrontational stance against the political and business elite to demand systemic reforms.

In late 2024, more than 30 students were wounded after an explosion caused by homemade firebombs intended for use during a student protest in Santiago. In May, three students were shot and wounded during a shooting inside a school in the Bío Bío region, in what authorities described as the first school shooting in Chile.

Army Investigating Helicopter Incident Outside Kid Rock’s Home

0

The U.S. Army is reportedly investigating why two Apache attack helicopters were hovering outside Kid Rock‘s Tennessee home on Saturday (March 28).

The helicopters could be seen in a video posted by the performer on social media. The scene appears to have played out over Rock’s sprawling “Southern White House” mansion in Whites Creek, which sits just north of Nashville.

What The Army Said About Kid Rock’s Helicopter Video

Nashville’s NewsChannel 5 (WTVF) has published a statement from a public affairs officer with the 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell. The U.S. Army installation straddles the Kentucky/Tennessee border northwest of Whites Creek.

“Fort Campbell leadership is aware of a video circulating on social media depicting AH-64 Apache helicopters operating in the vicinity of a private residence associated with Mr. Robert Ritchie (also known as ‘Kid Rock’),” Major Jonathon Bless said in the statement. “The command has initiated an investigation to review the circumstances surrounding this activity.”

NewsChannel 5 is also reporting that an Apache helicopter flew over a “No Kings” protest in Nashville on Saturday. Officials are still unsure if it was “incidental” or “deliberate.”

Kid Rock Facing Backlash Over Video

Rock posted the video on his social media on Saturday, along with a message to current California Governor Gavin Newsom.

The video shows Rock standing by a pool at his home while a low-flying helicopter hovers nearby. A second helicopter can be briefly seen flying by at a higher altitude.

“This is a level of respect that shit for brains Governor of California will never know,” Rock wrote. “God bless America and all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to defend her.”

It was not clear in Rock’s post whether the flyby was planned. The video drew criticism from those concerned about government funding potentially being used to conduct a courtesy flight outside of a celebrity’s home.

“Imagine thinking this looks cool instead of ridiculous,” reads a response to Rock’s video on X. “Military choppers aren’t your personal props and our tax money isn’t a slush fund for ego boosts.”

Army Attack Helicopters Flying Over Residential Areas

There is some precedent for U.S. Army attack helicopters to fly over residential areas similar to where Rock lives and the alleged incident at the “No Kings” protest.

“Our pilots do regularly fly routes outside of the Fort Campbell area,” a spokesperson told NewsChannel 5.

According to Military.com, flights over civilian areas can often be part of a pilot’s training regimen.

“Those missions are funded through readiness budgets and often take place over civilian areas, even when they appear unusual in isolation.”

Kid Rock has, of course, been a magnet for controversy throughout his career. Here is a look back at some of his more stunning moments.

Cowboys unsure if George Pickens will attend offseason workouts

0

A year after dealing with Micah Parsons‘ contentious holdout, the Dallas Cowboys face another potentially tumultuous offseason with another one of their star players.

Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer was recently asked about George Pickens‘ potential participation during the team’s upcoming offseason workouts. Pickens, who was named to his first Pro Bowl during his first season in Dallas, was given a nonexclusive tag by the team earlier this offseason.

Schottenheimer, speaking from the NFL meetings in Phoenix, said that he did not know if Pickens was planning to attend the voluntary workouts.

“And I haven’t pushed that on him,” Schottenheimer said, via ESPN. “I mean, again, we’re all going through the process. It’s almost April. We’re still a couple weeks away. It’s going to play out the way it plays out. Again, it’s all voluntary. We’ll see where it goes.”

Pickens, 25, was traded to Dallas from Pittsburgh last offseason. In 17 games last season, Pickens set single-season highs in catches, yards and touchdowns while matching his career best in yards per reception.

Similar to his years in Pittsburgh, Pickens’ success in Dallas hasn’t come without some turbulence. He and fellow wideout CeeDee Lamb were benched for the start of the Cowboys’ eventual win over the Raiders after missing curfew. Later in the season, Pickens’ again made headlines for the wrong reasons after he failed to give a full effort on several plays during a late-season loss to the Lions

In Pittsburgh, Pickens also drew criticism after he failed to make a full effort during plays. He was also fined numerous times for unsportsmanlike conduct during his years with the Steelers, who selected him in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Pickens (who has the same agent as Parsons, who ended up being traded to Green Bay after talks with Dallas fell through) and the Cowboys have not engaged in contract talks since the team placed the $28.8 million tag on him. Because he was given the nonexclusive tag, Pickens could be acquired as a free agent by another team if it was willing to give up two first-round picks or another deal that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones would have to sign off on.

At this point, Schottenheimer doesn’t appear to be too worried about Pickens’ status for voluntary workouts. He also doesn’t appear to be looking too far down the road in terms of Pickens’ future with the team beyond this season.

“Hey look, GP loves it here. We love GP,” Schottenheimer said. “We have plans for GP to be here for a long time, so we’ll let the business side of this thing play out and see where it goes.”

Barring the unexpected, it appears that Pickens will continue to wear the Cowboys’ star in 2026. Whether or not he participates in voluntary workouts, however, is anyone’s guess.
