What Hank Williams Jr. Did for Kid Rock Will Knock Your Socks Off

0

Everyone knows that Hank Williams Jr. is an icon — not just in country music, but in the mainstream as well.

When the legend himself stopped by the Taste of Country Nights studio to chat it up with me, he told me about an epic story that features him and Kid Rock, along with Brett Favre’s mom and the Green Bay Packers.

Williams Jr. tells me, “Kid Rock wanted to go to a [football] game in Green Bay one time. I made one phone call.”

Taste of Country logo

Williams Jr. didn’t say who that phone call was to, but judging by Rock’s reaction, it was to someone pretty darn high on the list of people who can make something happen within the Green Bay Packers organization.

Williams Jr. said that Rock called him, “and he said, ‘Man, they picked me up and I’m sitting there with Brett Favre’s mother, and they had me in the box and I cannot believe you put that together in five minutes.'”

When Did Brett Favre Play for the Green Bay packers?

This story most certainly dates back to between 2000 and 2007. Those were Packers years for Favre that Kid Rock was famous during. Although it is possible that Rock and Williams Jr. were friends prior to Rock having success in music, it is unlikely.

Williams Jr. replied to Rock on the other end of the phone that day and said, “Well, you know, I’m a rich, honky icon.”

Pirates-Reds SGP: Expect massive Paul Skenes bounce-back start

0

Pittsburgh Pirates ace and reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes didn’t have just the worst start of his MLB career last time out, it was arguably the worst in franchise history on Opening Day. But I expect a major bounce-back effort in an April Fools’ Day matinee from Cincinnati with a 12:40 ET first pitch Wednesday. Some rain is forecast, so maybe it’s delayed, but the series finale between NL Central rivals should be played.

Check out our bet365 promo code to see the great new offer available when you wager on MLB futures.

It was rather humorous being in the SportsLine Discord MLB channel last Thursday afternoon around 1:20 ET time, because everyone in there was dropping curse words about losing No Run First Inning on the Pirates-Mets opener from Citi Field. That was the most-wagered NRFI of the first full Opening Day because it featured a pair of aces in Skenes and New York’s Freddy Peralta.

Instead, a shocking seven first-inning runs were scored, five of those via the Mets off Skenes. He was pulled after just 37 pitches, allowing those five earned on four hits with two walks and one strikeout in just two-thirds of an inning. It marked the shortest season debut ever by a reigning Cy Young winner among those whose first appearance was a start.

Fans who want to wager on MLB futures and tail Matt Severance’s picks can check out the latest BetMGM promo code.

Since at least 1900, there hadn’t been another starting pitcher in Pirates history who didn’t make it at least one full inning on Opening Day. To be fair, center fielder Oniel Cruz badly misplayed two balls that essentially led to at least of the five runs. Originally a shortstop, Cruz is still a work in progress when it comes to playing center. Entering the season, Skenes had made 55 career starts and had only given up more than three runs five times.

“Flush it… nice to get [a bad start] out of the way,” Skenes said. “You have to look at it for what it is — there wasn’t a ton of hard contact.” He’s right, there wasn’t.

The sportsbooks did punish him a little as Skenes moved from the +220 favorite to repeat for the Cy Young to +400 second favorite at FanDuel behind Philadelphia’s Cristopher Sanchez (+300), who was the 2025 runner-up to Skenes and got all 30 second-place votes. (Sanchez is also pitching Wednesday afternoon vs. Washington.)

Check out the latest DraftKings promo code and bet on Wednesday’s game.

It was the shortest start of Skenes’ career, and he had never failed to get through at least two. His previous shortest came on Sept. 28, 2024, against the Yankees, when he was pulled after two perfect innings simply because of innings management at the end of his NL Rookie of the Year campaign. His quickest unplanned exit had been Sept. 16, 2025, when Skenes lasted 3 2/3 innings and allowed three runs and seven hits in a loss against the Cubs.

What did Skenes do in his next start after that Cubs debacle? Threw six shutout innings with seven strikeouts and no walks in a no-decision in Cincinnati. Boy has the righty had the Reds‘ number in his young career, going 4-0 with a 0.31 ERA and 0.79 WHIP in five starts with 40 strikeouts and 21 hits allowed in 29 innings. No active Reds player has gone yard off him.

The SportsLine Projection Model has Skenes at 6 1/3 innings Wednesday, with 1.6 earned runs and 4.1 hits allowed, along with 6.8 strikeouts but only a 28% shot to get credit for the victory. DraftKings has has an O/U of 7.5 strikeouts, with the Under at -140.

It’s a good young lefty on the mound for Cincinnati in 26-year-old Andrew Abbott, who finished eighth in the 2025 NL Cy Young voting after going 10-7 with a 2.87 ERA. Abbott took a no-decision in his 2026 opener vs. Boston despite six shutout innings. He’s 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in three career starts vs. Pittsburgh, so runs should be at a premium today. New Pirate Brandon Lowe has had some limited success vs. Abbott with two doubles in three at-bats. The model gives Abbott a 35% shot of winning today.

Pirates-Reds DraftKings same-game parlay (+100)

Fans looking to follow Severance’s same-game parlay can do so with the latest FanDuel promo code.

The model has the Reds winning 4.0-3.8, but I want to get above 9 for the alt total. If Cincinnati pushes at +2, that leg simply falls off. Feels like a one-run game to me, but I prefer the run line insurance. Check out other expert picks in the daily newsletter.

Chang Ung, North Korean ex-IOC member who brokered Olympic joint marches with South, dies

0

SEOUL, South Korea — Chang Ung, a former North Korean member of the International Olympic Committee who once led sports exchanges with rival South Korea including joint marches of their athletes at the Olympics, has died, the IOC announced Wednesday. He was 87.

The IOC said on its website that it had learned with “extreme sadness” of Chang’s death on Sunday. It said the Olympic flag will be flown at half-mast for three days at Olympic House in Lausanne, Switzerland in a show of respect.

The IOC statement didn’t describe the cause of Chang’s death. North Korea’s state media has not reported on his death.

Born in 1938, Chang was originally a basketball player who captained the North Korean national team. After retiring from the sport, he became an athletics administrator, serving as a vice sports minister, a vice chairman of North Korea’s national Olympic Committee and a vice president of the Olympic Council of Asia.

In 1996, Chang was elected to the IOC. As North Korea’s only-ever IOC member, he represented his country on international sports fields and headed numerous — if often rocky — talks with South Korea to promote sports exchange and cooperation programs between the rivals.

The most notable results of this diplomacy came at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, when athletes of the two Koreas marched together under a “unification flag” depicting their peninsula during the opening and closing ceremonies, the first joint parade since their division in 1945.

Athletes of the Koreas walked together at following Olympic Games and major international sports events, including the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics in South Korea. After watching a joint march in Pyeongchang’s opening ceremony, Chang told reporters that he was “deeply moved.”

Chang played a key role in earlier talks with South Korea, which led to the two countries sending their first unified male and female teams to the 1991 world table tennis championships in Chiba, Japan. In Pyeongchang, the two Koreas fielded their first combined Olympic team for women’s ice hockey.

But sports ties between North and South Korea have suffered as political relations frayed.

There have been no sports and any other exchanges programs between the countries for years. North Korea has shunned talks with South Korea and the U.S. since its leader Kim Jong Un’s broader nuclear diplomacy with U.S. President Donald Trump collapsed in 2019. He’s also branded South Korea a permanent enemy and rejected the idea of future unification.

The IOC said Chang’s contributions helped advance sports participation, cultural exchanges and the role of sport in society.

“His efforts to promote cooperation on the Korean Peninsula demonstrated the power of sport to build bridges and inspire hope,” IOC President Kirsty Coventry said.

The IOC said Chang served on several commissions including Sport for All and International Olympic Truce Foundation.

North Korea’s official news agency, KCNA, last mentioned Chang in 2023, when he was awarded the Olympic Order, an award given to those who have made extraordinary contributions to the Olympics, during an IOC session in Mumbai, India. Chang, then an honorary IOC member, joined the ceremony by video.

CONVERGE Appears To Be Releasing Another New Album This June

0

Metalcore heavyweights Converge are set to continue their very prolific modern era, with a second full-length album in 2026 titled Hum Of Hurt reportedly arriving on June 5 via Epitaph Records.

The announcement follows a wave of renewed activity from the band, who only recently returned with Love Is Not Enough earlier this year. That release marked their first mainline Converge album since 2017’s The Dusk In Us, but it appears it was just one part of a much larger creative surge.

According to drummer Ben Koller when Converge was working on new stuff, the band entered the sessions armed with an overwhelming pool of material — a sign of just how productive the writing period had become: “27 song ideas had been in the works, with at least 17 of them having been tracked.”

With only a portion of that material making it onto Love Is Not Enough, speculation quickly mounted that more music was on the way — a theory seemingly confirmed when a cryptic Converge billboard appeared in Boston, Massachusetts, accompanied by record label branding.

Now, according to Apple Music listings, the band are indeed preparing to release a second album in quick succession. Hum Of Hurt is scheduled for June 5, 2026, and will be preceded by its title track as the lead single, set to arrive online tomorrow, April 1.

Alex Ovechkin scores twice, hitting 30 goals for 20th season, as Caps win

0

Alex Ovechkin scored twice and hit the 30-goal mark for the record-extending 20th time in his NHL career, and the Washington Capitals beat the Philadelphia Flyers 6-4 on Tuesday night.

Ovechkin’s latest milestone 30-goal season is three more than the next-closest player (Mike Gartner, 17 times), according to ESPN Research. He has hit that mark in all but one season: the COVID-shortened 2020-21 campaign, where he had 24 in 45 games.

Ovechkin joined Gordie Howe (who did it two times), Teemu Selanne and Johnny Bucyk as the only players in NHL history to score 30 goals in a season at age 40 or older, per ESPN Research.

Ovechkin’s 30th and 31st goals marked his 185th career multigoal game; only Wayne Gretzky has more with 189.

Tom Wilson also had two goals, Jakob Chychrun had a goal and two assists and Ryan Leonard added a goal and an assist. Pierre-Luc Dubois had three assists for the Capitals, who have won three straight as they try to climb back into playoff position.

Travis Sanheim, Carl Grundstrom, Christian Dvorak and Denver Barkey scored and Porter Martone made his NHL debut for the Flyers, whose three-game winning streak came to an end.

Late in the first, Wilson’s shot from the slot made it 1-0 in his 900th career NHL game. Minutes later, Ovechkin cashed in Matt Roy‘s cross-crease feed to extend Washington’s lead to 2-0.

The Flyers fought back to open the second, evening the score in a span of 4:36 minutes on a point shot from Sanheim and layup from Grundstrom. Washington didn’t take long to respond, though, as Chychrun’s one-timer on a power play made it 3-2. Leonard scored another power-play goal later in the period to put the Capitals back up by two.

While Dvorak pulled things to 4-3 to open the third, Ovechkin got to the front and buried a one-timer to restore the two-goal lead with his 928th career goal.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
