Pope Leo starts 2026 with prayer for countries “bloodied by conflict,” families wounded by violence

0

Pope Leo XIV opened 2026 on Thursday with a plea for peace, singling out in particular countries “bloodied by conflict” and families wounded by violence.

Leo celebrated a New Year’s Day Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica and then delivered a special noontime prayer from his studio overlooking the piazza, which was full of pilgrims and tourists on the bright, chilly day.

Leo noted that Jan. 1 marks the church’s World Day of Peace and used the occasion to issue a prayer.

“Let us all pray together for peace: first, among nations bloodied by conflict and suffering, but also within our homes, in families wounded by violence or pain,” he said.

In Leo’s first Christmas homily last week, he condemned the “rubble and open wounds” left behind by wars and singled out the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. He also urged Russia and Ukraine — in a Christmas blessing — to find the “courage” for direct talks to end their war.

After a busy Christmas season, Leo will have a few days of rest before he celebrates the church’s Epiphany holiday on Jan. 6. On that day too, he officially closes out the 2025 Holy Year, the once-every-quarter-century celebration that brought millions of pilgrims to Rome.

Immediately thereafter, he is to preside over a two-day meeting of the entire College of Cardinals, the princes of the church who elected him pope, as well as those who are over age 80 and didn’t participate in the conclave but still remain part of the college. Leo is resurrecting a tradition largely eschewed by Pope Francis to convene cardinals every so often to seek their counsel on how to govern the 1.4 billion-strong Catholic Church.

Pope Leo XIV became the first American pontiff in church history when he was chosen by his fellow cardinals in May at a Vatican conclave.

2026 Dynasty TE Rankings and Tiers

0

Happy New Year!

While redraft managers are entering into the quiet time of year, one of my favorite things about Dynasty Fantasy Football is that there is no offseason. We are rapidly moving into 2026 NFL Draft prospect analysis and will soon start delivering our prospect profiles to get you ready for your rookie drafts. But first, it’s time to update my Dynasty rankings at each position, and in this first installment of 2026, I am also including a look at my top three tiers at each position. At the tight end position, it has been a year of transition. Travis Kelce may be saying goodbye, David Njoku battled injuries and got replaced, and George Kittle turned 32 and missed six games due to injury. Thankfully, we had an elite rookie class to fill the void.

Tier 1

Brock Bowers, TE, Raiders
Trey McBride, TE, Cardinals

Tier 1 is the same as it was a year ago, and in the same order. I would understand if you put McBride ahead of Bowers after this past season. I haven’t because I think there is significant risk that McBride takes at least a small step backwards next year, and mostly because Bowers played hurt on the worst offense in football this year. Hopefully, the Raiders do some significant work to improve that side of the ball in the offseason. Having the No. 1 pick sure would help.

Tier 2

Colston Loveland, TE, Bears
Harold Fannin Jr., TE, Browns
Tyler Warren, TE, Colts
Tucker Kraft, TE, Packers
Sam LaPorta, TE, Lions
Oronde Gadsden II, TE, Chargers
Kyle Pitts, TE, Falcons

This is a mega tier, and honestly, it is probably a bit too big. The three rookies at the top definitely belong in the same tier, and the four guys below them are not far behind. Pitts is the wild card in this group and probably deserves a tier of his own. Pitts set a career high in catches and touchdowns this year, just turned 25 years old, and is a free agent. His landing spot could go a long way towards determining whether he belongs in this tier.

On the most recent episode of FFT Dynasty, I had Dan Schneier on to offer his takes on what we saw in 2025 and what it means for 2026. We talked Jaxson Dart, Marvin Harrison Jr., Harold Fannin, and more. Check it out:

Tier 3

AJ Barner, TE, Seahawks
Isaiah Likely, TE, Ravens
Mason Taylor, TE, Jets
Dalton Kincaid, TE, Bills
Terrance Ferguson, TE, Rams
Theo Johnson, TE, Giants
George Kittle, TE, 49ers

This tier is such a mixed bag that I am not sure you can summarize it in a paragraph. What I am sure of is that people will think I have Kittle way too low, but injuries aren’t the only reasons he’s slotted here. Outside of touchdowns, his efficiency fell off a cliff in 2025, and he averaged a career low in yards per catch and YAC/reception. He’s still awesome, but Father Time is undefeated, and he may have landed his first punches in 2025.

Here is the first edition of my 2026 Dynasty TE rankings:

Flash floods triggered by heavy rains in Afghanistan kill at least 17 people

0

Afghanistan’s disaster management agency says the season’s first heavy rain and snowfall has ended a prolonged dry spell but triggered flash floods, killing at least 17 people and injuring 11 others

KABUL, Afghanistan — The season’s first heavy rains and snowfall ended a prolonged dry spell but triggered flash floods in several areas of Afghanistan, killing at least 17 people and injuring 11 others, a spokesman for Afghanistan’s national disaster management authority said Thursday.

The severe weather also disrupted daily life across central, northern, southern, and western regions, according to Mohammad Yousaf Hammad, who is spokesman for Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority.

He said the floods also damaged infrastructure in the affected districts, killed livestock, and affected 1,800 families, worsening conditions in already vulnerable urban and rural communities.

Hammad said the agency has sent assessment teams to the worst-affected areas, with surveys ongoing to determine further needs.

Afghanistan, like neighboring Pakistan and India, is highly vulnerable to extreme weather events, particularly flash floods following seasonal rains.

Decades of conflict, poor infrastructure, deforestation, and the intensifying effects of climate change have amplified the impact of such disasters, especially in remote areas where many homes are made of mud and offer limited protection against sudden deluges.

Miami stuns Ohio State in Cotton Bowl, reaches CFP semis

0

ARLINGTON, Texas — Mario Cristobal shared a moment with legendary Miami coach Jimmy Johnson on the sideline during the Hurricanes’ 24-14 win over No. 2 Ohio State on New Year’s Eve. The man who recruited Cristobal to The U was on hand along with former greats Michael Irvin and Ray Lewis.

No. 10 Miami turned back the clock on the field too, withstanding a second-half surge from the defending national champion Buckeyes to become the first double-digit seed to make the College Football Playoff semifinals in the 12-team playoff era.

The Hurricanes, whose postseason hopes looked bleak after an overtime loss to SMU in Dallas on Nov. 1, returned to Texas and won two games — at No. 7 Texas A&M on Dec. 20 and Thursday against the Buckeyes — to pull to one game away from a national championship appearance at Hard Rock Stadium, their home field.

Miami jumped on the Buckeyes, holding them to nine yards in the first quarter, their fewest in any quarter since having minus-6 in the first quarter against Michigan in 2017, according to ESPN Research. The Hurricanes racked up 110 yards, the second most the Buckeyes allowed in a first quarter all season.

After Miami scored on a 9-yard throw from Carson Beck to running back Mark Fletcher Jr., Ohio State’s Julian Sayin completed a 59-yard strike to Jeremiah Smith on the first play of the Buckeyes’ next drive, and it looked like they could quickly even the score. But Keionte Scott stunned Sayin two plays later, stepping in front of a screen pass, intercepting it and returning it 72 yards for a touchdown, the second-longest pick-six in College Football Playoff history.

“I shot my shot, and the ball went in my hands,” Scott said. “I was full of emotions. I think I took a little moment to peek at the [Ohio State] sideline and look at everybody and let them know what was going on. So that was a pretty cool moment. … Just having fun. At the end of the day, that’s what this team relies on — just going out there, playing free and just having fun.”

After trailing 14-0 at halftime, Ohio State closed the gap to 17-14 with 13:28 left in the fourth quarter. But Miami’s defense, which harassed Sayin with five sacks, seven tackles for loss and two interceptions, was able to withstand the Buckeyes. CharMar Brown scored a 5-yard touchdown with 55 seconds left to finish a 10-play, 70-yard drive that took 5:01.

The Hurricanes were able to grind out the win, picking off Sayin two plays later amid a fierce pass rush. Their 24 points were the most Ohio State gave up this season.

“Our players kept responding,” Cristobal said. “Our players kept coming with their counterpunch. The touchdown drive at the end and then to finish it off with an interception … those are great counterpunches. Those are just really left hooks to the body and to the head. Those are great, great counterpunches by our team.”

The Miami offense wasn’t flashy, but it was physical, including the play of Beck, who completed 73.1% of his passes for 138 yards and a touchdown with no turnovers. He especially showed his toughness on a play in the fourth quarter, on third-and-11 at the Miami 24, when he scrambled for 11 yards, fighting for every yard.

“He said he was going to run somebody over,” Fletcher said.

“He did say that,” Cristobal added.

Beck, a backup to Stetson Bennett on Georgia‘s 2021 and 2022 national championship teams before transferring to Miami, said this season’s experience with the Hurricanes was uncharted territory for him.

“Shoot, I’ve never been on this stage before,” Beck said. “I’ve obviously played at Georgia and played in big games, but I’ve never had the opportunity to be a starting quarterback in the playoffs. I’ve been able to be a part of national championship teams and championship teams, but I’ve never had this opportunity. So for me, I’m taking it in one moment at a time, one play at a time, and just giving everything that I have for this football team.”

Beck said the chess match against Ohio State was a battle with NFL talent all over the defense, saying the Buckeyes had size and speed and closed quickly.

“They’re probably the most talented defense I’ve ever faced,” Beck said. “Just player to player, that’s one hell of a team, and I’m really proud of our guys to be able to pull it out against a team like that.”

Cristobal said he was proud of how far the Hurricanes have come since the loss to SMU, continuing to believe and improve. Now they will wait on the results of Friday’s Allstate Sugar Bowl between No. 6 Ole Miss and No. 3 Georgia. The winner will face Miami in a CFP semifinal at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 8.

“That’s their DNA, but that’s the way we’ve been working hard to wire our team,” Cristobal said. “Probably the most important, we have a long way to go. But we are getting better in really good chunks and really good increments.”

Fletcher, who led Miami with 90 rushing yards on 19 carries, said this team is fulfilling Cristobal’s promise to return the Hurricanes to prominence.

“I’ve been here since the start,” Fletcher said. “I just trusted his plan, trusted the vision. And he told me that we’ll get this program back to national championship status, and we just continue to keep on going one game at a time.”

Alabama vs. Indiana prediction: Expert picks and odds for Rose Bowl CFP quarterfinal

0

Once dubbed by the legendary Keith Jackson as “The Granddaddy of them All,” the Rose Bowl has changed dramatically in recent years — a reflection of college football as a whole. While it no longer features the best of the Big Ten and the Pac-12, it’s still one of the most anticipated events on the college football calendar every year as an annual site for the College Football Playoff quarterfinal.

What hasn’t changed is the time the game is played, or the beautiful setting. Also, as luck would have it, the Big Ten champion will play in the game this year, with the No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers squaring off against No. 9 Alabama.

This is Indiana’s second straight season reaching the College Football Playoff, and the Hoosiers are hoping it goes better than last year when they lost a first-round game at Notre Dame. Alabama did not make the 12-team field last season, but is a playoff regular, and came back from a 17-0 deficit to beat No. 8 Oklahoma in the first round.

It’s the first matchup between these two schools with very different backgrounds, and the winner will move on to face the winner of the Orange Bowl in the Peach Bowl on Jan. 9.

Alabama vs. Indiana: Need to know for Rose Bowl

This is the first time Indiana will play a game as the No. 1 team in the country: When the Hoosiers beat Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship it didn’t just result in their first Big Ten championship since 1967, it moved them to No. 1 in the CFP poll as well as the AP Top 25. It’s the first time in history the Hoosiers have been No. 1 in the AP poll, which means that when they take the field in Pasadena, it’ll be the first time they’ve played a game as the No. 1 team in the country. How ironic that it comes against the program that’s been considered the most dominant of the BCS and playoff era?

Alabama has been to more Rose Bowls than Indiana: The SEC has never had a tie-in with the Rose Bowl, but this will be Alabama’s ninth appearance in the game. The Tide were last here for a College Football Playoff semifinal against Michigan on New Year’s Day of 2024, losing to the Wolverines. They also won a Rose Bowl during the 2020 College Football Playoff. Their last trip to the game that wasn’t a playoff appearance was in 1945, which was one of their six appearances from 1926 to 1946.

Fernando Mendoza is the first Heisman winner in Indiana program history: Given Indiana’s lack of overall success in football, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. Mendoza won the Heisman Trophy this year after leading the Hoosiers to an undefeated season and a Big Ten title. It’s his first year with Indiana, as he began his college football career at California before transferring to the Big Ten. It seems the move was a wise decision on Mendoza’s part.

Alabama vs. Indiana prediction, picks

The total for this one feels a little low. I’m not expecting a shootout, but I do believe both offenses are capable of moving the ball against these opposing defenses. Oklahoma probably should’ve scored more than it did against Alabama in the first round, and while Indiana’s defense has been exceptional, it has been prone to allowing explosive passes this season, which is an area Alabama thrives. Won’t be a shootout, but it won’t be a rock fight, either. Pick: Over 48.5
