Women in Trade Summit draws career-curious and experts
Central New Mexico Community College has seen a 14% increase in women enrolling in skilled trade programs.
Young women are increasingly interested in having a career in the trades, and the 5th annual Women in Trades Summit at the Central New Mexico Community College on Saturday was an opportunity to learn about many different ways to get started. The event brought together industry experts, along with hands-on demonstrations and family-friendly activities. Joy Forehand, vice-president of Workforce and Community Success at CNM, said there has been a 14% increase in women enrolling and declaring majors in skilled trade programs over the past five years.”We’ve been really excited over the last couple of years with some state funding that has come to support that we’ve moved to 90% paid internships, moving away from unpaid internships that are typical in the history of higher education programs,” Forehand said. “Now we’ve been so fortunate to offer paid experiences for our students, which is critical because so many come to college and come for educations and training, and they have work experience.”The trades students are being trained for include HVAC, architectural drafting, carpentry, mechatronic and industrial automation, machine tool tech, culinary and beverage production, and auto and diesel services, Forehand said. “We think our auto program is the third highest with women in it,” she said.
