Second round of winter weather to impact Albuquerque Thursday night

SEVEN NEWS AT SIX STARTS RIGHT NOW. WINTER WEATHER HAS ARRIVED IN THE LAND OF ENCHANTMENT. IT FOLLOWS A LONG STRETCH OF UNSEASONABLY WARM TEMPERATURES AND NOW AREAS ACROSS OUR STATE ARE SEEING FRESH SNOW FALLING THIS EVENING. IT’S A STORM. OUR CERTIFIED MOST ACCURATE TEAM OF FORECASTERS HAS BEEN TELLING YOU FOR DAYS WAS ON THE WAY, AND OUR TEAM IS BRINGING YOU WEATHER TEAM COVERAGE FROM GALLUP TO ALBUQUERQUE THIS EVENING. WE BEGIN WITH CHIEF METEOROLOGIST BYRON MORTON SHELLEY. AND DOUG. WE HEAR RIGHT HERE IN THE STUDIO RIGHT NOW, COMING DOWN REALLY HARD OVER THE STATION HERE AT KOAT 7. AND OF COURSE, WE’RE AT CARLISLE AND COMANCHE. THIS IS A LIVE LOOK I-40 AT RIO GRANDE AND LOOK AT THE SNOW THAT IS COATED THE ROADWAY THERE. THIS IS A BURST OF VERY HEAVY SNOW. AND ALSO THE INTENSE THUNDER AND LIGHTNING. YOU HEAR THAT? SO YOU WANT TO STAY INSIDE, AWAY FROM WINDOWS. I-25 IS CRAWLING RIGHT NOW SLOWER BECAUSE OF THAT SNOW THAT’S COATING THE ROADWAY. THIS IS GOING TO COAT THE AREA WITH ANYWHERE FROM A QUARTER OF AN INCH TO A HALF INCH OF SNOWFALL IN A VERY SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME. DROPPING THAT VISIBILITY, YOU SEE THE THUNDER AND LIGHTNING WE HAVE OUT THERE RIGHT NOW AS WELL. WE WARNED YOU THAT THIS WOULD BE THE IMPACT TIME PERIOD RIGHT AROUND 6:00. AND THERE IT IS, THAT STORM ON KOAT 7 WEATHER RADAR ROLLING INTO ALBUQUERQUE. VERY HEAVY RAINFALL. THERE COULD BE SOME THUNDER IN THIS TOO. AND AS I MENTIONED, THAT RAINFALL CHANGING OVER TO SNOW, IT’S KIND OF LIKE A SNOW PELLET THAT IS ROLLING THROUGH THE ALBUQUERQUE METRO AREA RIGHT NOW UP THROUGH RIO RANCHO, THE NORTH VALLEY INTO BERNALILLO, ALGODONES ALL ALONG THE I-25 CORRIDOR. WE’VE HAD DIFFICULT ROAD CONDITIONS BEING REPORTED BACK TO THE WEST OF ALBUQUERQUE AROUND LAGUNA. YOU SEE THE SNOW FALLING THERE IN BLUE AND ALSO ACROSS AREAS OF NORTHERN NEW MEXICO. WE’RE SEEING THAT SNOW AROUND CUBA INTO THE NORTHERN MOUNTAINS OF NEW MEXICO, BACK TO THE SOUTHWEST, AROUND AMADOR AND BATTLE. THIS IS THE LEADING EDGE OF THAT NEW WINTER STORM THAT IS SWEEPING INTO NEW MEXICO. COMING UP IN JUST A MOMENT. OLGA BREESE WILL BE BACK WITH HOW THE ROAD CONDITIONS WILL FARE FOR YOUR FRIDAY MORNING COMMUTE. BUT FIRST, GET BACK TO DOUG AND SHELLY AND IT IS ABSOLUTELY POURING. WE CONTINUE OUR TEAM COVERAGE NOW WITH SASHA. YEAH, SHE’S LIVE FOR US IN THE ALBUQUERQUE FOOTHILLS. HEY, SASHA. HI, SHELLY. HI, DOUG. THINGS HAVE TAKEN A TURN HERE IN THE FOOTHILLS. WE’RE NEAR PASEO DEL NORTE, JUST WEST OF TRAMWAY. COME 4:00, YOU SAW A LOT OF SUNSHINE. YOU CAN HEAR THE THUNDER RIGHT NOW. 5:00. THE TEMPERATURES DIPPED ABOUT EIGHT DEGREES. AND ABOUT TEN MINUTES AGO, WE HAD A SHEET OF ICE AND RAIN HIT US. NOW TEMPERATURES HAVE DIPPED ABOUT TEN DEGREES. WE’VE SEEN LIGHTNING OFF IN THE DISTANCE JUST WEST OF OUR LOCATION, ON AND OFF FOR THE LAST TEN MINUTES OR SO. AND NOW WE’RE HEARING THUNDER. IT IS LIGHTLY SNOWING ON AND OFF. I DON’T THINK YOU CAN SEE IT RIGHT NOW, BUT WE DO KNOW CITY AND STATE CREWS HAVE BEEN PREPARING FOR THIS STORM, GETTING THE ROADS READY AS IT HITS. TAKE A LOOK AT THIS VIDEO. YOU CAN SEE THE CITY LOADING UP THEIR TRUCKS AND SPREADERS WITH SALT AND CINDER. THEY HAVE BEEN OUT GRINDING THE BRIDGES AND THE HILLS. ALBUQUERQUE ALREADY SEEING PARTS OF THE STORM. YOU HEARD BYRON MENTIONED THE NORTH VALLEY, THE I-25 CORRIDOR GETTING HIT WITH THAT SNOW. RIGHT NOW THE SANDIA IS GETTING HIT YESTERDAY AND GETTING HIT YET AGAIN TODAY. LAW ENFORCEMENT ASKING ALL OF US TO PREPARE AS WE DRIVE TONIGHT AND INTO THE OFFICE TOMORROW MORNING, MAKE SURE THAT YOU FIND AN ALTERNATE ROUTE AND GIVE YOURSELF EXTRA TIME. WE SEE PEOPLE IN THE MORNING TOMORROW MORNING. PEOPLE WILL BE LATE FOR WORK AND THEY’LL BE GOING SPEED TOO FAST FOR CONDITIONS AND THEY GET IN AN ACCIDENT AND THEY RUIN EVERYBODY’S DAY. SO BE COURTEOUS OF OTHERS. AS WELL. AND YOU SAW FROM BYRON MENTIONING I-25 AT A CRAWL RIGHT NOW, THAT WILL PROBABLY BE THE CASE TOMORROW MORNING WITH THE ICY CONDITIONS THAT WE MAY HAVE OVERNIGHT. SO PACK YOUR PATIENCE, GIVE YOURSELF ENOUGH TIME TO GET OUT THE DOOR, ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE HEADING OUT THE OFFICE OR OUT LATER TONIGHT WITH THE STORM, THINGS MAY TAKE A LITTLE BIT LONGER TO GET WHERE YOU NEED TO GO. LIVE IN THE FOOTHILLS. I’M SASHA LENNINGER KOAT ACTION 7 NEWS BACK TO YOU. SCARY. THAT FLASH OF LIGHTNING LEFT BEHIND. SASHA THERE JUST ABOUT 30S AGO. WELL, TODAY IN THE SANDIA FOOTHILLS IN ALBUQUERQUE, SCHOOL BUS SLIDES OFF THE ROAD, PROMPTING A RESCUE OF THE DRIVER AS THE BUS SAT ON THE SIDE OF A 30 FOOT EMBANKMENT, ACCORDING TO BERNALILLO COUNTY FIRE RESCUE. THE DRIVER WAS NOT HURT AND NO KIDS WERE ON BOARD. THEY ARE STILL DETERMINING THE CAUSE. AND WE CONTINUE OUR WEATHER TEAM COVERAGE NOW WITH JASON MCNABB. HE’S LIVE TO TELL US WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE IN GALLUP. WELL, THAT’S RIGHT, DOUG AND SHELLY. IT HASN’T SNOWED HERE FOR ABOUT TWO HOURS NOW, BUT IT IS STILL VERY COLD AND FRIGID. THE LAST TIME I CHECKED THE TEMPERATURES WE HAD JUST CREPT DOWN INTO THE 20S. HERE AT 29, I CAN SEE MY BREATH. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THE ROADS TO THE SIDE OF ME HERE. AS YOU CAN SEE, THERE IS STILL SOME MOISTURE STUCK TO THAT ROAD IN THE MEDIAN WHERE CARS HAVEN’T BEEN DRIVING. IT DOES LOOK PRETTY SLICK OVER THERE, SO I IMAGINE IT WILL GET WORSE AS THE NIGHT GOES ON AND GETS COLDER AND IS. GALLUP EXPECTS MORE SNOW COMING IN LATER INTO THE NIGHT. I WANT TO GIVE YOU A LOOK AT WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE JUST ABOUT THREE HOURS AGO. HERE AT WE THE PEOPLE PARK. WE COULD SEE THAT SNOW COMING DOWN ALMOST LOOK LIKE HAIL IN ITS CONSISTENCY. IT DID START STICKING TO BOTH THE THE ASPHALT HERE IN THE PARKING LOT AND TO THE ROAD AND ALL THAT SURROUNDING DIRT AND DESERT IN THE AREA AROUND HERE. YOU KNOW, AS WE DROVE INTO TOWN THIS MORNING, WE SAW A LOT OF THOSE WHITEOUT CONDITIONS COMING JUST INTO GALLUP. IT WAS SNOWING PRETTY HARD AS WE CAME IN. WE TALKED TO SOME PEOPLE HERE IN GALLUP, YOU KNOW, INCLUDING SOME TRUCK DRIVERS AND PEOPLE JUST RUNNING ERRANDS FOR THE DAY. THEY SAID WHILE THESE CONDITIONS WEREN’T TOO FAVORABLE FOR THEM, THEY SAID THEY WERE PREPARED EITHER WAY. I HAD TO CHOP WOOD THIS MORNING AND BRING IN SOME MORE. SO WE JUST HAD THE FIRE GOING ALL NIGHT, AND THAT’S BEEN A TOUGH TOO, BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, THE WEATHER AND EVERYTHING GOING EAST AND WEST. I’M GOING EAST. I’M GOING TO PHILADELPHIA TOWARDS ALBUQUERQUE. YEAH. YOU’RE WORRIED ABOUT WHAT MIGHT BE LURKING AHEAD OUT THERE? NO, NO, NOT AT ALL. AND WE’VE BEEN SAYING IT TIME AND TIME AGAIN THROUGHOUT OUR NEWSCAST. SASHA JUST MENTIONED IT EARLIER. THESE ROADS WILL BE SLICK. DRIVING CONDITIONS CAN GET DANGEROUS. PLEASE USE CAUTION WHEN YOU’RE OUT HERE. DON’T DRIVE UNLESS IT’S COMPLETELY NECESSARY. FO
