Taylor Sheridan is revisiting one of the biggest controversies surrounding Yellowstone, offering a different perspective on Kevin Costner‘s much-discussed exit from the hit series.
During an appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast, the Yellowstone creator addressed the actor’s departure and pushed back on the narrative that it was simply the result of behind-the-scenes drama.
Instead, Sheridan says Costner was never meant to be on the show for its entire run.
It Was Always the Plan
According to Sheridan, Costner’s original contract only called for three seasons.

“He was only supposed to be in the first three seasons,” Sheridan said. “That was in his contract. In my mind, that’s when his youngest son takes over [on the show].”
Sheridan explained that the original plan changed because the network wanted to keep Costner’s John Dutton at the center of Yellowstone.
“But the network was so scared of not having Kevin be a part of it, even though Kevin was ready,” he said. “He was ready to go. He had other things he wanted to do, but he stayed on for another two seasons.”
Costner’s Exit Fueled Months of Speculation
When Costner ultimately left Yellowstone, fans speculated that creative differences and scheduling conflicts had led to a falling out between the actor and Sheridan.
The hit western, which aired from 2018 to 2024, followed powerful Montana rancher John Dutton and his family, including Beth (Kelly Reilly), Rip (Cole Hauser), Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Jamie (Wes Bentley).
Costner’s character was ultimately killed off during the series’ final season, bringing John Dutton’s story to an end.
Sheridan Has Long Downplayed Feud Rumors
Sheridan’s latest comments echo remarks he made in 2023, when he acknowledged that Costner’s departure changed how John Dutton’s story concluded but denied reports of an irreparable rift between them.
At the time, Sheridan said Costner wanted to leave the series to focus on directing Horizon: An American Saga. He said the two sides worked toward a schedule that would allow Costner to leave the series, adding that he never viewed their disagreements as a personal feud.

Sheridan also praised Costner’s portrayal of John Dutton, calling the character “symbolic and powerful,” and said he and the actor were always able to work through any issues they had.
Although Costner exited Yellowstone before the series ended, the impact of John Dutton continued to be felt throughout the franchise.
The character has been referenced multiple times in the spinoff Dutton Ranch, which premiered in May, underscoring the family patriarch’s lasting influence even after his on-screen death.

The addition of Lioness, Landman and the Madison to the canon creates more crossover opportunities, which Sheridan has taken advantage of.
