Whole Foods recalls dozens of products due to potential salmonella contamination

Whole Foods is recalling dozens of products due to potential salmonella contamination, the retailer announced Wednesday.

All of the recalled products contain jalapeños sourced from Coast Citrus Distributors, which has been tied to a recent multistate salmonella outbreak.

Dozens of major retailers announced recalls tied to the distributor last week, with Whole Foods joining the ranks Wednesday.

Officials with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have previously urged the public not to eat fresh jalapeños distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors, saying hundreds of people have been infected in multiple states.

Whole Foods says it’s recalling select products from its produced and prepared foods departments. Those products were sold online and at stores in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and Wisconsin.

All of the recalled products have best before/best by dates between Aug. 7 and Aug. 16, company officials said.

Customers who purchased any of the products listed should not consume them, federal officials said. Instead, discard the product or bring a valid receipt to any Whole Foods Market store for a full refund.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis, health officials say.
