What Happened To Riley Green’s Character?

Date:

Sunday night’s episode of Marshals revealed several secrets about Garrett (played by Riley Green), Kacey Dutton and the infamous Yellowstone train station.

While not the finale, it was an hour of television that provided payoff for conversations teased all season long.

  • Riley Green debuted on Marshals last month. His character Garrett is an old Navy SEAL friend of Kayce Dutton’s but it quickly became clear there was more to their story.
  • More TV work is coming the singer’s way. Last week NBC revealed he’ll join Season 30 of the Voice.
  • Talking to Taste of Country, Luke Grimes revealed how Green got the part on Marshals.

If you don’t want to know what happened during Ep. 11 of Marshals (titled “On Thin Ice”) then watch this video interview with actor Luke Grimes instead. Spoilers are definitely coming.

Marshals, S1 E11 Recap

Cal (Logan Marshal-Green) and Kayce are trying to escort fugitive Neil off the mountain when a snowstorm pushes them into an abandoned cabin for shelter. That’s when the drama begins.

Kacye is really making Cal feel guilty about Roner, a Navy SEAL buddy who died in combat. Through flashbacks we learn what happened and at first it seems like Cal (as leader) left Roner behind to die. Later we learn the truth.

First, Cal learns the truth about Kacye’s family. After Cal falls through the ice, Neil is forced to give up his thermal shirt and everyone is shocked to see he has the Yellowstone ranch brand on his chest. Then, as Kayce is off gathering fire wood, Neil fills Cal in on the train station, where Duttons have been tossing their dead for decades.

A confrontation between the two ensues but it’s interrupted when Neil escapes. Quickly they catch him and the audience is led to believe Cal kills Neil without Kacye knowing about it. That quickly takes a backseat to the story Cal tells about Roner.

Garrett, not Cal, left Roner behind. Cal has just been covering his teammate all these years at the expense of an addiction and psychological trauma. Garrett has also been struggling, and his story gets wrapped up next.

What Happened To Garrett (Riley Green) on Marshals?

Last week, Garrett was hospitalized after a fire at Kayce’s place. While Cal and Kayce are on the mountain, he succumbs to his injuries.

“The damage from the fire meant he wasn’t getting enough oxygen to his body,” a doctor tells the men, plus Andrea, who had started to date Garrett. “The strain of it all was too much on his heart. He passed about two hours ago. I’m so sorry.”

Green’s character was always a tragic one so his death isn’t surprising. His larger purpose on Marshals was to fill in backstory and bring Cal and Kayce closer together, and it worked. By the end of Ep. 11, the two men have agreed to cover for one another, meaning no one from the Marshals team will learn about the train station (for now).
