Water rescue underway in Tempe

Crews responded to Tempe Town Lake Monday afternoon near Rio Salado Parkway and Mill Avenue, officials say.

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department Dive Team will conduct a “recovery operation” Tuesday morning for a person who reportedly swam two-thirds across Tempe Town Lake, became submerged and wasn’t seen again.

A resident at a nearby apartment saw the person in the water, officials with the Tempe Fire Department said in a statement.

“The resident filmed the swimmer but didn’t call for help until 40 minutes later,” the statement said.

Dive crews spent three hours Monday night searching the lake but nothing was found, officials said. Crews are expected to be back on the lake at 6 a.m. Tuesday.

No other information was given.

This is a developing story; additional details will be added as they become available.
