Vice President JD Vance is in Switzerland, ready to lead high-stakes negotiations with Iranian leaders focused on Iran’s nuclear program and renewed fighting in Lebanon. Before departing Saturday, Vance outlined his priorities for the talks. “The way we’re going to do this is that we’re gonna have a principled level of political leadership at the top,” Vance told reporters Saturday. “We’re hopefully making progress on the nuclear issue, make progress on the Lebanon ceasefire issue. Those are the two big things that I think we’re going to be focused on. I’m sure the Iranians … going to have issues they’d like to discuss as well.”But negotiations already face significant challenges. Renewed fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon initially delayed the start of negotiations.Iran accused Israel of violating a ceasefire in Lebanon and retaliated by claiming it had closed the Strait of Hormuz. But U.S. Central Command disputed Iran’s claim, stating that traffic, including millions of barrels of oil, continues to flow through the vital waterway. Vance said he can stay in Switzerland for the next “day or two” but noted an emergency session on Lebanon is first on the agenda. He’ll join Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who are reportedly already on the ground working on details of nuclear talks. President Donald Trump addressed the situation on social media, stating that there would be no tolls for the Strait of Hormuz during or after the current ceasefire, unless imposed by the U.S.He also warned that if a deal is not reached within the 60-day deadline, the U.S. will impose its own tolls on the region “for services rendered as the Guardian Angel to the countries of the Middle East for purposes of both the past, present and future,” the post read.The U.S. and Iran have less than 60 days under the current agreement to finalize a peace deal.
