Vasquez calls for clarity on Social Security taxation

Date:

Tax time is not a good time for seniors to find out that their Social Security benefits are being taxed after all, says Rep. Gabe Vasquez (D-NM), who represents the state’s 2nd congressional district. Vasquez fired off a letter Tuesday to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Social Security Administration Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano that basically says, “What gives?” Congressional Republicans and the administration had repeatedly said that the taxes on Social Security benefits were eliminated, but in July, the Social Security Administration issued a correction that said the taxes on benefits were still in place. The contradicting announcements created confusion and disappointment. “New Mexico seniors work their entire lives to earn Social Security benefits,” Vasquez said in a news release statement. “It’s ridiculous that this administration has willfully caused so much confusion by openly lying about cutting taxes on Social Security. I’m calling on the Treasury Department to straighten this out before ‘tax day.'” Vasquez’s letter to Bessent and Bisignano was co-signed by Reps. Sharice Davids (D-KS), Eric Sorenson (D-IL), Seth Magaziner (D-RI), and Angie Craig (D-MN). KOAT will update this story when Vasquez shares a response to his letter or more information is made available.
