The Finance director of Valencia County has resigned after a scam involving $2 million in funds going towards a new hospital being built in Valencia County. The email phishing scam took place back in January of 2026 after someone posted as a member of a construction company called Bradbury Stam Construction, which was the company that Valencia County had been using to fund their new hospital in Los Lunas. The fraudulent company allegedly reached out to Valencia County back in April 2025, requesting payment. In January 2026, Valencia County leaders were alerted by Bradbury Construction that there was an outstanding invoice that they were waiting to receive. The Finance director then advised that the invoice had already been paid through the ACH payment system.The incident was then recognized as fraud and reported to the appropriate authorities. A third-party investigation was then conducted According to the County Manager, the finance director resigned on March 13. The County says they believe that funds are recoverable and that the hospital project remains on track for completion in August.
