Vail’s CEO Has Transformed Skiing, Whether You Like It or Not

Rob Katz knows some skiers don’t like him. But the chief executive of Vail MTN 2.11%increase; green up pointing triangle Resorts has dramatically changed the ski industry over the past two decades—and that’s usually worked out well for his business.

Katz, 58, is plunging into one of Vail’s toughest seasons since he began working with the resort company more than three decades ago. Last winter, visits to Vail’s 37 North American resorts declined, even though the number of U.S. skiers hitting the slopes increased overall. Sales of Vail’s flagship product, its all-access Epic Pass, have been going downhill. The company’s stock price is down more than 50% since its peak in 2021.
