ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —
UNM Health is addressing concerns after a cyberattack on Monday, with reports surfacing this week that a ransomware group claimed responsibility for the incident.
“So what I can say is we’re also aware of those claims by that group,” said Chris Ramirez, communications director for UNMH.
The community’s top concern is whether personal or patient data was stolen during the attack.
“That’s the number one question that members of the community have right now. And our response is we are waiting to find out. There is a criminal investigation that’s being led by the FBI,” said Ramirez.
While UNM Health stated that operations have returned to normal, some employees have been asked to wait before turning on their electronic devices.
“We are communicating with different work groups and our students each day to let them know when it’s safe for them to turn on their devices,” said Ramirez.
Authorities also cautioned individuals about potential scams or false offers of payments following the cyberattack.
“To let people know that if they’re contacted by somebody or a group taking responsibility for this threat, that they should not engage at any level,” said Ramirez..
The FBI is investigating the cyberattack and will release more details once that investigation is over.
