Friday’s Five Facts

[1] Video shows moments after deadly shooting on campus and the suspect’s interview – On July 24, police responded to an on-campus dorm to reports of shots fired. A 19-year-old was shot and injured, and a 14-year-old, Michael Lamotte, was found dead in the room. Lamotte’s older stepbrother was also in the room. John Fuentes, 18, is charged with the boy’s murder. Newly released security video shows the moments before UNM police arrive, and the interview he later gave to investigators.

[2] Officials outline impact of looming tribal funding cuts in New Mexico – New Mexico’s tribal leaders say they are preparing for cuts under President Donald Trump’s proposed fiscal year 2026 budget. New Mexico Indian Affairs Secretary is warning lawmakers what could be lost. Navajo Nation Vice President Richelle Montoya echoed those concerns, pointing specifically to reduced Indian Health Services funding for the Gallup Indian Medical Center.

[3] Hotter today, but stormier and cooler weather ahead – Scattered storms will develop across most of New Mexico Friday afternoon and evening with heavy rain more likely in eastern New Mexico. There will be a higher threat of flash flooding and burn scar flash flooding Friday. High pressure pushes farther west by Sunday, allowing for more low level moisture to move up from the southeast. This will increase the chance for rain again Sunday and on Labor Day.

[4] New Mexico United and UNM partner up to fight hunger with tailgate supply drives – New Mexico United and the University of New Mexico’s athletics department are working together to fight hunger by running supply drives. The final supply drive will be August 30, at Isotopes Park, from 3 – 5:30 p.m. Fans who donate five or more items will get tickets to the New Mexico United game on September 10, or the UNM Football home opener on September 6.

[5] One-eared pig found in the South Valley is adopted – Van Gogh, a special one-eared pig, was recently found breaking into a South Valley yard, stealing apples. Bernalillo County Animal Shelter staff said he spent the week taking luxurious mud baths and feasting on apples. On Wednesday, shelter staff happily announced that he had been adopted.
