ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It wasn’t a win on Saturday at the Big House, but UNM football did show some fight in a 34-17 loss to #14 Michigan. Slow out of the gates, UNM allowed 17 unanswered points to start the game. The Lobos would find their footing in the second quarter, though, as they scored on a trick play and then forced a fumble in the ensuing kickoff, which then led to a 44-yard field goal.
It was 24-10 at the half, and UNM would score one more touchdown in the third quarter. Jack Layne hit Thomas Dorian for a three-yard touchdown, and that would cut Michigan’s lead to 10. Layne finished with one TD on 208 yards passing, but he also racked up three interceptions. UNM went on to finish with 267 total yards of offense, but that would not compare to Michigan’s total of 452 yards. Wolverines Freshman QB, Bryce Underwood, would finish with 251 of those yards with his arm.
“You know, we kept battling, and I thought we competed, I thought we played hard right to the end. You know, I am proud of the defense; they got a few stops late, but you know, when you lose the turnover margin, three-nothing, against a team like Michigan on the road, your chances of winning are one in a million. So, we got some feedback and we have to get better, but I believe in these guys and I think we will continue to get better and grow,” said UNM Head Football Coach Jason Eck.
UNM returns to Albuquerque to prepare for their home opener, which will be Saturday, Sept. 6, against Idaho State at 1:00 p.m.
