ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —

For the first time in its 90-year history, the University of New Mexico (UNM) football program is ranked in the AP Top 25 college football poll. UNM received 179 points to crack No. 22 in the nation.

Lobos defeated the San Jose State Spartans Saturday, 21-16. This marking the first time since November 1, 1969, they beat the Spartans on the road. The Mountain West Conference hasn’t had a ranked team since Boise State was No. 25 in the 2025 preseason poll.

According to the Associated Press, the AP Top 25 voters are writers and broadcasters who cover college football. AP employees do not vote, but they choose the voters. Voting happens online, and the count is automated first before AP checks for errors.

The poll operates on a 1-to-25-point system, with the No. 1 team receiving 25 points down to the 25th team receiving 1 point. The first rankings for College Football Playoff will be released on Tuesday, November 3, at 5 p.m. MDT.
