Santa Fe City Council is reviewing a proposal to close a portion of San Francisco Street, from Lincoln Avenue to Old Santa Fe Trail, through October to enhance pedestrian safety on the south side of the plaza. The plaza, which sees nearly 2 million pedestrians annually, already has three sides closed to traffic. The new proposal would extend the closure to the fourth side, with an exception for cruise nights. “I bike around a lot and I walk through a lot of places. And I think the more pedestrian safety we can have the better,” one resident said. Lynn Otero, a Santa Fe resident of over 20 years, voiced her support for the plan. “I think if you close off all this area, it’ll be a good walking area, you know, and I’ve traveled all over. So for me, I think it would be easier to get around and not deal with all the traffic,” Otero said. However, not everyone supports the idea. “I don’t think it’s a good idea. It’s part of the culture of this city. It’s the plaza. People come down, they drive through. There’s no parking for the tourists to park and come,” another resident said. Santa Fe Mayor Michael Garcia declined to comment but shared on his social media page that he is seeking public feedback on the proposed road closure.
