Thunderstorm chances continue through Friday before drier weather returns

Date:

Monsoon moisture will keep storm chances in New Mexico through at least Friday. Hotter and drier weather will move in this weekend.

It was a very active day of showers and storms across New Mexico. Storms dropped heavy rain in parts of the state today as well, bringing nearly 20 Flash Flood Warnings. There have also been a few strong to severe thunderstorms across the state today as well. The storms will continue across the state into the overnight hours, still bringing a risk for heavy rain and flash flooding. Most of them will end by Thursday morning, but expect there to be more humidity in the air tomorrow from today’s rain.

Another active day is on the way Thursday with more scattered afternoon showers and storms. More flash flooding will be possible again too. Drier air will start moving in from the west on Friday. This will begin cutting back on rain. We will still see isolated showers and storms develop Friday afternoon, but areas in the Rio Grande Valley, northwest, and southeast New Mexico will be drier. Temperatures will also start a warming trend Friday afternoon.

Much drier air will move in this weekend, bringing dry conditions to almost all of New Mexico. Temperatures will be heating up this weekend too with above average temperatures statewide by Sunday. Isolated storm chances return again next week as a center of high pressure moves right over New Mexico. This will keep hot temperatures in place, but recycled monsoon moisture will bring daily isolated storm chances to parts of the state.
