Thousands gather in Albuquerque to remember Ozzy Osbourne
Thousands gathered in Albuquerque on Wednesday to remember global icon Ozzy Osbourne, a day after his passing following a battle with Parkinson’s. Revel Entertainment hosted a candlelight vigil and tribute night for free, hoping to bring the Duke City’s metal community together to honor Osbourne, known largely as the godfather of metal. “New Mexico has a notorious metal following,” Revel Owner and Founder Daniel Chavez told KOAT. Osbourne made numerous trips to the Land of Enchantment over the years, including playing multiple shows and hosting the heavy metal music tour Ozzfest. A ticket to Osbourne’s 1986 show at Tingley Coliseum, featuring Metallica as a special guest, cost $14, according to a photo from a KOAT ULocal Viewer. Osbourne also employed Albuquerque musician Randy Castillo as his lead drummer in the 1980s. “It’s a dream come true. I’ve always wanted to do what I’m doing. I was dreaming about that when I was in West Mesa High, and I was like, ‘I want to be a rock star, you know?'” Castillo told KOAT in 2000. He died from cancer in 2002. In 2018, Osbourne visited various cities in New Mexico as part of the reality TV show airing on A&E called “Ozzy and Jack’s World Detour.” The visit prompted the rock star to become an official member of the city’s chamber of commerce.
