LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

A New Mexico native has made a career out of producing and arranging some of the most popular songs in pop music. On Saturday, Spencer Proffer will share some of his wisdom with students from New Mexico State University.

Proffer will present his documentary “The Day the Music Died” as part of a special event for the Las Cruces International Film Festival on Saturday at the Rio Grande Theatre.

The film focuses on the Don McLean classic song “American Pie” and its impact on American culture. Proffer will also teach a special class at NMSU on entrepreneurship.

“I want to inspire the students to come to the festival, to the classes, and this film is a good source of inspiration and hope,” Proffer said. “When you go into the lyric of each verse (of ‘American Pie’), the journey of the song is a lot deeper than just what you hear as a campfire song on the surface.”

Proffer is credited with producing the first heavy metal album to reach number one on the Billboard charts, “Metal Health,” by Quiet Riot. He has plans to work with NMSU’s Creative Media Institute Director Ross Marks on a number of projects in the near future.
