
An hourslong Interstate 40 closure has ended in a fatal police shooting in Albuquerque.Police shot at the suspect, who died at the scene. The Multi-Agency Task Force has responded to begin investigating the shooting.An Albuquerque Police Department spokesperson said officers were working to detain an armed person. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office was assisting in lane closures.Below is an update provided by an Albuquerque police spokesperson on Tuesday night prior to the shooting.In an update, police spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos said the suspect was still at large Tuesday night. The suspect has not cooperated with police commands, according to Gallegos.The initial police response was for a vehicle crash, which the suspect left the area before officers arrived. A second response for the same described driver led to officers discovering they had a handgun.This led to Albuquerque police SWAT being contacted. The suspect was believed to have shot at a police drone amid the arrest efforts, according to Gallegos. Stretches of Interstate 40 and Eubank Boulevard are closed due to Albuquerque police activity.
Both interstate directions are shut down between Wyoming and Juan Tabo Boulevards, according to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office. Additionally, north and southbound traffic on Eubank has been closed from Copper Avenue to Hotel Circle.
An Albuquerque Police Department spokesperson said officers are working to detain an armed person. SWAT are on scene responding as well. BCSO is assisting in lane closures.
