Storm chances will increase starting Friday across New Mexico. The stormier weather will continue into September with cooler temperatures.
A few scattered showers and storms have again popped up in New Mexico Thursday afternoon. These are mainly moving east across southern parts of the state. A couple strong storms have also formed behind a cold front draped across northeast New Mexico. While the rain and storms will end later tonight, the cold front will push south and west across the state. It won’t bring cooler temperatures, but it will bring an increase in moisture by Friday morning. The increase in moisture will start a stormier pattern across New Mexico again. Scattered storms will develop across most of New Mexico Friday afternoon and evening with heavy rain more likely in eastern New Mexico. There will be a much higher threat of flash flooding and burn scar flash flooding Friday.
Drier weather will briefly move back into western and northern New Mexico Saturday, pushing the rain chances into southern and eastern New Mexico. Heavy rain and flash flooding will still be possible. High pressure pushes farther west of New Mexico by Sunday, allowing for more low level moisture to move up from the southeast. This will increase the chance for rain again Sunday and on Labor Day. Temperatures will also be cooler on Sunday and Labor day with the increase in moisture and chances for rain.
Afternoon storm chances will continue through at least the middle of next week.
