Storm chances stick around this week

Date:

Rain chances will be slightly lower in the middle of the week as temperatures heat up. Higher rain chances return later in the week as a traditional monsoon pattern sets up.

Showers and storms are moving through New Mexico today, especially over and around mountain ranges. A weak cold front from the northeast has increased the amount of moisture in the air, especially in eastern New Mexico. It has also kept high temperatures a couple degrees cooler this afternoon. These storms will end later tonight as skies clear out in northern New Mexico while some cloud cover will linger in southwest parts of the state.

High pressure starts moving towards New Mexico Wednesday. This will start a warming trend statewide that will last through Thursday when the high pressure center moves over the state. This will also mean bad news for rain chances, but there will still be daily storms over and around mountain ranges again.

The high pressure system will move eastward on Friday, setting up a traditional monsoon pattern across New Mexico. This will draw up moisture into the state, bringing scattered thunderstorm chances along and west of the central mountain chain Friday afternoon. That plume of monsoon moisture will move eastward this upcoming weekend, leaving the Four Corners area dry once again. Heavy rain will be possible with these storms Friday through Sunday, bringing a threat of flash flooding, especially over burn scar areas.
