Storm chances shift to favor more of Western New Mexico today with another round of hot temperatures.

Record-challenging highs expected this weekend with storm chances trending lower, Heat Advisory possible for Roswell.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.

Overnight showers and storms have wound down, and we start today with just a few clouds around and warm temperatures well into the 60s and 70s. This starting point will lead to an easy jump back up into the 90s and 100s around most of the state again this afternoon, numbers well above later-August averages and close to records for the date. While we do expect some monsoon storms to develop this afternoon, it will be more scattered to isolated than the past couple afternoons with Albuquerque only seeing a slight chance of a storm this evening. Be aware though that any storm could still produce heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts.
This weekend we will continue to see monsoon storm coverage decrease with Saturday afternoon’s storms expected to stay up along the Continental Divide and then mainly into Northwest New Mexico and the 4-Corners area, and Albuquerque’s forecast high of 97 at the Sunport would tie the record! Little change Sunday with any chance of storms generally favoring the northwest, and Albuquerque looks to be headed for another record-tying 97 degree high! Places like Roswell are probably going to be placed under a Heat Advisory this weekend with forecast highs of 105 on both Saturday and Sunday!
Early next week storms will continue to be scarce, on Monday and Tuesday it looks like storm chances will favor the north and northeast, and then by Wednesday and Thursday storms could start to favor the central, south and east. The heatwave will likely continue right on through next week as well. Monday is expected to be a record-breaker in Albuquerque, Tuesday and Wednesday will probably come in just shy of records, and then on Thursday we expect another record breaker! We are definitely on track to see the new hottest August in Albuquerque’s recorded weather history!
