Eight New Mexico restaurants will compete Monday, Sept. 14, in the Original Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge at the New Mexico State Fair. The winner earns the title of State Fair Champion.

The competition begins at noon on Main Street, just north of Heritage Avenue. Competitors include:

  • Fuego 505
  • Effingbar
  • Sparky’s
  • Stackers Burger Company
  • Badlands Burgers & Brews
  • Fat Sats
  • La Villa Burgers and Boba
  • Smash and Shake

The restaurants will compete for two awards: a blind-judging championship and a people’s choice award.

Fairgoers interested in judging will have a limited opportunity to participate.

The New Mexico State Police will distribute 300 scratch-off envelopes — 100 will contain winning scratchers that can be redeemed for a wristband and ballot. The remaining 200 will contain other prizes.

Participants must have both a wristband and a ballot to serve as people’s choice judges. Organizers said that anyone who is a judge should arrive early.

The Original New Mexico State Fair Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge crowned Fuego 505 of Albuquerque as the Blind Judging Champion, while Badlands Burgers and Brew from Aztec took home the crown of People’s Choice Champion.

La Villa Burgers and Boba out of Santa Rosa won 2nd place in the blind judging competition while Fat Sats of Belen took home 3rd.
