Emergency responders evacuated residents near the confluence of the Rio Puerco and Rio Grande on Sunday as the Rio Puerco swelled following a week of intense rainfall.

The National Guard was working together with Valencia County Fire Department and the Socorro County Office of Emergency Management to conduct an active water rescue near I-25 and Highway 60.

The Socorro County Office of Emergency Management said Highway 60 was flooded and highwater rescue teams were conducting evacuations. The office advised evacuees from the San Francisco area to relocate to Finley Gym in Socorro and for travelers to avoid the area.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation noted the Rio Puerco was running at high volumes, with reports that the river was flowing higher on Sunday than it was when it caused flash flooding in Socorro County at the beginning of October.
