‘Sewer singer’ gains fame for underground opera performances

A wastewater and drinking water operator from Massachusetts has gained viral fame on TikTok for his opera performances in the sewer systems where he works. Meet 32-year-old Kyle Kilroy.His love for singing began in childhood. “I got into chorus in middle school and high school,” Kilroy said. “I started singing the anthem at a couple of basketball games.” He trained in opera during college, but music remained a hobby for him. Now, his work environment in the sewer system provides an unusual but effective setting for his performances. “When the blowers aren’t on, and the water’s not rushing, I’m like, ‘Oh, this is pretty good down here!'” Kilroy said of the sewers’ acoustics. He began posting videos of his singing on TikTok, and his talent quickly gained attention. “It took off like right away,” Kilroy said, laughing. In one of his videos, Kilroy performs the national anthem, showcasing his operatic range. “You know, opera is kind of something that I put in my back pocket for a while,” he said. “So I was like, you know, maybe I’ll just give this a shot and put some feelers out and see if people like it, and the response from it was crazy. And I was like, this is awesome! Alright!” Kilroy’s dream is to sing the national anthem in Boston, and he’s not picky about which team he performs for. It’s a goal he hopes to achieve someday.
