Scotty McCreery Says Retirement Isn’t Happening, But This Is

Date:

Scotty McCreery isn’t thinking about retirement anytime soon, but the American Idol winner admits he is thinking more about what his schedule will look like as his family continues to grow.

Now a Family Man, Scotty McCreery Wants to Play Fewer Shows

In an exclusive conversation on Taste of Country Nights, McCreery told me that retirement isn’t something he even considers at this point in his career. Instead, he’s starting to think about playing fewer shows and spending more time at home with his family.

“Yeah, the retirement thing doesn’t ever, I mean I’m only 32, I’ll be 33 here in a month or two, but I don’t, I don’t ponder retirement,” McCreery tells me. “I do ponder doing less shows on the road. I think that’ll happen pretty soon.”

The reason has everything to do with his boys growing up.

McCreery’s oldest son, Avery, is approaching an age where he’ll start getting involved in school activities and Little League. And McCreery knows he doesn’t want to be on the road for every important moment.

The man who wrote “5 More Minutes” wants exactly that… more time to just exist around his family.

“Just the boys are growing up, you know, Avery will be 4 this year, he’ll be 5 next year,” he says. “He’s gonna start doing Little League, and he’s gonna start having events at school and I’m not always gonna want to be gone, you know.”

That doesn’t mean McCreery is ready to give up the part of his life that he’s spent years building.

He still loves performing, touring and getting in front of his fans.

“I love what I do, I love the band, I love touring, I love seeing the fans, I love the music,” he says.

This whole conversation came up because McCreery is pals with Darius Rucker, who announced he plans on retiring soon. I wanted to know if Rucker’s announcement struck a chord with him, now that he has two children.

For McCreery, it’s less about walking away from country music and more about finding a better balance between his career and being there for his kids.

He says, “So I’ll never, I don’t, retirement, that word never crosses my mind, but slowing down a little bit does.”
