Millan Baca, principal at Rio Rancho High School, was named New Mexico Principal of the Year at the annual conference of the National Association of Secondary School Principals in Washington, D.C. In his long career in the Rio Rancho public schools, Baca has served as a social studies and English teacher, assistant principal, and vice principal before becoming principal of RRHS in 2023.”I started off in the district as a humanities teacher,” Baca said, “and what I think I’m doing as the principal is that I’m getting a little of what I’ve learned from these wonderful people I’ve spent the last 22 years with, and applying it to the operation of this campus.”Among Baca’s initiatives since becoming principal are programs to increase attendence and instructional time, and to expand tutorial services. At the NASSP conference, he was able to share ideas on improving education with principals from other states.
