The pool is coated with polyurea, *** waterproofing material that protects the concrete. The Hearst National Investigative Unit asked two polyurea experts, Kyle. Flanagan and Aidan Bradley to review photos, video, and project documents. They had no role in the project. Both identified two potential areas of concern. There doesn’t seem to be *** problem with surface preparation and coating coming up from the concrete. Um, so far what we see are like tie-in detail problems. The first involves tie-ins where one day’s spray work meets the next. The experts say if overlap work is not done within 6 hours, it’s not going to stick, which is why you might be seeing this flapping effect and people lifting up the feathering. The second concern is the pool’s expansion joints. Does it appear that the expansion joints have been sprayed over? It looks like it. But we can’t be definitive. The experts say expansion joints should not be coated. If they are, the polyurea can crack, allowing water into the joints and potentially cause leaks. We asked the company that did the work whether the joints were sprayed, but they didn’t respond. The reflecting pool will be drained for repair following the 4th of July celebration. Our experts say that if those expansion joints were sprayed, the sealant will need to be removed.
