Pueblo leaders said they’re hoping this park will put them on the map for sports. “You need to make it high level, it needs to be Red Bull certified, so that if these kids get good, they have an outlet that can come over here to give them that chance,” said Lt. Governor Craig Quanchello for Picuris Pueblo
A ribbon cutting for the Picuris Pueblo bike park took place on Saturday and included hundreds of people from the community, along with sport-bike enthusiasts. The park features pro-level mountain bike dirt-tracks and ramps along with a Red Bull-certified pump track. Lt. Governor Quanchello said they’re hoping this park will also open the door for sports tourism, attracting professional bike competitions to boost the economy, and give Pueblo vendors opportunities to sell their local products.
“This facility is really about an extreme level of adventure. These ramps are big, and Picuris Pueblo made some choices about scale that are impressive,” said Carl Colonius with the New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Division.
The park was designed and built by Rocket Ramps, which has designed other BMX ramps in Santa Fe. Even though the park is on pueblo land, it will be open to the public. The park was funded in part by a $500,000 grant from the New Mexico Economic Development Department. The entire project cost more than $700,000.
