President Donald Trump’s Truth Social profile posted a map of New Mexico on Sunday with its name crossed out and the word “America” written just beneath.
The post came just a few weeks after President Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America.
State lawmakers immediately pushed back at the image.
Sen. Martin Heinrich wrote on his X profile, “Three things I will always call by their actual names… The Gulf of Mexico, Lake Ontario, New Mexico.”
Rep. Melanie Stansbury also responded on X, writing, “Oh hell no!”
“Our state’s name carries generations of history, culture, and family—and it belongs to us. We’re New Mexicans. Period,” she wrote.
Rep. Gabe Vasquez also responded to the post, saying, “You don’t get to erase New Mexico.”
“Not our name. Not our history. Not our culture. The president may want to call us ‘New America,’ but we know who we are,” he said.
KOAT reached out to the Republican Party of New Mexico for comment but haven’t heard back yet.
