A person was shot during an encounter with federal immigration agents in the Bronx on Thursday afternoon, according to the New York Police Department.

Around 4 p.m., agents with ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations encountered a person they were targeting, and they fired shots, according to preliminary information from a law enforcement source.

The person injured in the shooting was taken to a local hospital for treatment and was conscious, police said. The injury was not considered life-threatening, according to the law enforcement source.

Two agents were also injured in the encounter, according to the source, and they are being treated at a local hospital.

CNN has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment.

The Associated Press reports that the shooting happened in the Marble Hill neighborhood, which is a small part of Manhattan attached to the Bronx.

The NYPD was not involved in the incident and was not at the scene of the shooting, the department said in a statement on X.

Hours after the shooting, agents with Homeland Security Investigations and police officers could be seen walking behind yellow police tape as a group of protesters started gathering at the scene.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a statement he has “called the President” and “will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city.”

Mamdani and President Donald Trump had not yet spoken as of Thursday evening, according to a spokesperson for the mayor.

“Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We are praying for his recovery,” Mamdani said. “Get ICE out of our neighborhoods.”

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she’s been briefed on the incident.

“We expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident,” she said in a statement. “New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why.”

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
