THIS IS KOAT ACTION SEVEN NEWS. WE BEGIN WITH BREAKING NEWS. THERE’S BEEN A DEADLY POLICE SHOOTING IN NORTHEAST ALBUQUERQUE AND STILL A HEAVY POLICE PRESENCE IN THAT AREA OF CENTRAL AND SAN MATEO. DETAILS ARE LIMITED, BUT POLICE SAY ONE PERSON WAS SHOT AND DIED AT THE SCENE. WE’RE GETTING AN UPDATE RIGHT NOW ON THAT SHOOTING. LET’S LISTEN. IN THE ALBUQUERQUE POLICE DEPARTMENT. WE’RE HERE TO PROVIDE A BRIEFING ON THE OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING THAT JUST OCCURRED AT CENTRAL AND SAN MATEO. THERE IS AN INDIVIDUAL THAT IS DECEASED AND AT LEAST TWO OFFICERS FIRED THEIR WEAPONS. WE RECOGNIZE THAT THIS IS THE THIRD OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING THIS WEEK. IT IS THE FIFTH THIS YEAR. WE HEAR THE CONCERNS OF THE COMMUNITY, AND WE ARE HERE TO TELL YOU WHAT HAPPENED THIS EVENING. I AM VERY GRATEFUL THAT OUR OFFICERS ARE SAFE ONCE AGAIN, OFFICERS WERE IN THE AREA OF CENTRAL AND SAN MATEO IN REFERENCE TO REPORTS OF AN INDIVIDUAL CRIMINALLY TRESPASSING WHEN THEY MADE CONTACT WITH THAT SUBJECT. HE FLED ON FOOT. THE OFFICER FOLLOWED HIM ON FOOT AND GAVE HIM COMMANDS TO STOP. ANOTHER OFFICER ARRIVED IN THE AREA TO ASSIST. THE INDIVIDUAL REMAINED BEHIND A PILLAR AT THE WALGREENS BEHIND ME, WHERE HE BEGAN YELLING AT THE OFFICERS. THEY SAW THAT HE HAD A LARGE KNIFE IN HIS HAND, AND THEY ADVISED HIM NUMEROUS TIMES TO PUT THE KNIFE DOWN. THE SUBJECT REFUSED TO DO SO, AND AT ONE POINT IN TIME HE CHARGED TOWARDS AN OFFICER. AS HE BEGAN TO COME CLOSER TO HER, HER FIREARM WAS DISCHARGED AND AT LEAST ONE OTHER OFFICER FIRED AS WELL. THE SUBJECT WAS CHECKED ON SCENE AND IS DECEASED. WE DO HAVE A TENTATIVE IDENTIFICATION AND WE RECOGNIZE THAT THIS PERSON HAS A CRIMINAL HISTORY OF OVER 30 ARRESTS IN RECENT YEARS. HE WAS ON PROBATION AND HAD AN ANKLE MONITOR. WITHIN THE LAST FEW WEEKS. HE CUT THAT ANKLE MONITOR OFF. HE HAS FELONY CHARGES, INCLUDING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, AGGRAVATED ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON. AGAIN, WE WILL UPDATE YOU WHEN WE HAVE FURTHER AND WHEN WE CAN RELEASE MORE INFORMATION. I WANT TO SAY AGAIN THAT WE RECOGNIZE AND HEAR THE CONCERNS OF THIS COMMUNITY, BUT I NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT MY OFFICERS GO HOME SAFE. ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS? OKAY. THAT WAS CHIEF PARKER UPDATING US ON THE SITUATION. SHE DID SAY THAT AT LEAST TWO OFFICERS FIRED THEIR WEAPON, THAT THE VICTIM, WHO WAS SHOT AND KILLED AT THE WALGREENS AT CENTRAL AND SAN MATEO, WAS HIDING BEHIND A PILLAR, CAME OUT, SHE SAYS, POINTED THE GUN TOWARD THE OFFICERS, AND THAT’S WHEN THEY FIRED BACK. THEY’RE SAYING TONIGHT THAT THIS ACCUSED SHOOTER HAS OVER 30 ARRESTS, FELONY CHARGES, AND HE CUT OFF HIS ANKLE MONITORING BRACELET. JUST IN THE LAST FEW DAYS OR WEEK

APD is currently investigating a police shooting that took place in the area of San Mateo Blvd NE and Central Ave NE. Police say they got a call for service in the area of San Mateo Blvd and Central Ave NE regarding an individual who was criminally trespassing. They said when they arrived, they made contact with the suspect who then fled on foot and remained behind a pillar at the Walgreens in the area. Officers say the suspect had a large knife and was advised to put it down. He then charged at an officer who then discharged her firearm. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. He has not yet been identified but police say he had over 30 arrests, felony charges, and had cut off his ankle monitor. No officers were injured.The public is asked to stay away from the area while they investigate. This incident marks the third police shooting in less than a week. This is a developing story and will be updated when more information becomes available.
