2013 is the 104th edition of the Drake relays. It’s hard to imagine that after more than 100 attempts you could find anything new on the Blue Oval. But our Scott Reister is live in the newsroom where tonight looked like nothing we’d ever seen before. And, they call them the London games rematches. We had big names, big money as well for the track events, $50,000 in prize money up for grabs, $2,500,000 to the winner. But we had *** local fan favorite who was running for more than just the green. Fans loving the action tonight, especially when guys in blue bodysuits are chucking free t-shirts in the crowd. That’s always fun. Women’s 1500 Olympian Jenny Simpson, the Webster City native, going for her third straight Drake relays title, chasing down Suzie Favor Hamilton’s record with ease. 4 minutes, 3.35 seconds, *** new relays record, the number one time in the world, and *** great moment in front of *** lot of friends and family. She even got *** hug from Grandma afterwards I have *** lot of family here in Iowa and *** lot of history here. My grandfather was *** graduate of Drake, and so the first thing I thought was I get to get my name on the stadium. So that’s really, really special to me and that was really honestly what I was going after this year. I’ve won here two years in *** row and thought, I don’t know if I can run 405 this early in the season, and I thought this is the season I’m really ready for it, so to get the record was really important to me. To the men, 110 m hurdles, world record holder Aries Merritt in the field in lane four. He’s got the neon shoes on, but watch out on your far right lane one, it’s Jamaican Andrew Riley winning it 13.43 seconds, 5 100s better than Merritt. 400 m hurdles. Michael Tinsley in the bright yellow, he won *** silver in London and he won the Drake relays on Friday. 48.55.18 better than Johnny Dutch. Tinsley loving the crowd and $25,000 to the winner is not bad either. *** lot of meets you can’t really make that much money in one race and to get out and run. *** meat in the United States worth $50,000 purse, um, $25,000 for first place. Um, if that doesn’t get you ready to run, I don’t know what will. 400 m former gold medalist Jeremy Warmer inducted into the Drake Relays Hall of Fame earlier, but he wasn’t the top man in his own. Race on Friday. That would be 19-year-old Lugale Santos, 44.74 seconds. He’s your winner by 6/10 of *** second over Warner, who was upbeat in defeat. The fans have been real supportive. Coming here is almost like running at home for us. They love Baylor, and I just want to continue to come here and give them *** good show. Field events had *** $25,000 total purse. London gold medalist Jen Schur said afterwards she’d been dealing with some injuries. She was not herself, and Yarsley Silva, who won the pole vault in the mall, won the real deal on Friday, clearing 15 ft 11 inches, *** Drake record, and *** Cuban national record. And he’s certainly *** lot of highlights to talk about from today. Tomorrow is going to be even more fun, 8:00 a.m. to 5. That’s *** lot of relays action. So don’t be like Andy and I. You might want to wear some sunscreen or you’ll be paying for it. Lolo, 2:45 tomorrow, she’ll hit the track, so of course we’ll be there for that. Scott Reicher, thank you very much for getting me in trouble. That’s right.
