NMDOJ rolls out scam prevention initiative to warn residents

The New Mexico Department of Justice is rolling out a new initiative to warn residents amid ongoing scams.

The initiative, called “Stop. Drop. Verify,” is aimed at educating New Mexicans about the increasingly sophisticated world of scams, including those using artificial intelligence, and how to recognize, avoid, and report them before harm occurs.

The Stop. Drop. Verify initiative guides New Mexicans to follow a three-step process if an individual thinks they may be getting scammed:

  • STOP all contact. Do not respond, click links, send money, or share personal information.
  • DROP everything and immediately protect your accounts. Change passwords and contact your bank or credit card company right away if financial information was involved.
  • VERIFY before sending any information or money. You can call the institution directly at a different/official number or consult with a trusted friend or family member.

It provides free educational training and resources on:

  • Scam Awareness Basics: What You Need to Know
  • Digital Deception: Online & Social Media Scams
  • Scams in the Age of AI
  • How to Spot a Scam
  • If It Happens to You: Taking Action After a Scam
  • Reporting Scams in New Mexico

Visit NMDOJ.gov for more information on requesting a training or to learn more about today’s common scams.
