New Mexico United is seeking a permanent home for its soccer team, with hopes tied to a state-funded revitalization plan for the state fairgrounds. Peter Trevisani, owner of New Mexico United, said, “But the last piece really is finding a permanent home to ensure this team is going to be here for 100 years.” The $200 million state-funded revitalization of the state fairgrounds includes plans for a stadium, and New Mexico United is eager to be part of the project. However, the team is waiting for the state to take the next steps. “So we’re hoping that in the next few months, the state puts forward sort of a request for proposal which has the details which are going to be critical,” Trevisani said. Over the years, New Mexico United has explored several locations for a stadium. Initial plans for the railyards and Balloon Fiesta Park were delayed due to legal challenges.Now, the state fairgrounds are being considered as another option. “Over the course of the last several years, New Mexico United has been looking for a permanent home. The first idea was at the railyards, the second idea was at Balloon Fiesta Park, but that’s all been held up in court. And now another location being looked is at the state fairgrounds,” Trevisani said. The United Soccer League has mandated that New Mexico United secure a permanent stadium, but the team was granted an extension.Since 2019, they have been playing at Isotopes Park. Trevisani acknowledged the possibility of the state fairgrounds plan not working out. “If this isn’t a path for us, then we still have the path to Balloon Fiesta. And if that doesn’t pan out, then we’re just going to have to take a step back and reevaluate where we are,” he said.
