New Mexico reported 454 traffic deaths in 2025, a small increase from 445 the previous year, according to a joint report from the University of New Mexico and the New Mexico Department of Transportation. Bernalillo County had the highest number of fatalities at 113, followed by McKinley County with 38 and Doña Ana County with 35.Despite the overall increase, some trends are moving in the right direction. Alcohol-related traffic deaths fell sharply to 129, down nearly 28% from 178 in 2024. Pedestrian fatalities also dropped, from 102 to 87. Shannon Glendenning, director of NMDOT’s traffic safety division, credited years of coordinated efforts between law enforcement, local programs, and public awareness campaigns.Meanwhile, infrastructure improvements continue to support safety. Westbound lanes at Second Street and Rio Bravo Boulevard in Bernalillo County are closed until Feb. 21 for concrete replacement and road widening. The Oñate Bridge in Española is set to reopen this spring after repairs, and a damaged I-10 bridge in Lordsburg has been fully restored.
