Senator Ben Ray Luján hosted a “Fourth in the Nation Matanza Rally,” as New Mexico prepares to be the fourth state to hold a Democratic presidential primary in 2028.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —
There was a Matanza Saturday in Albuquerque. Senator Ben Ray Luján hopes you get used to it.
The inaugural “Fourth in the Nation Matanza Rally” highlights New Mexico’s new standing among the Democratic National Committee. New Mexico will hold the fourth Democratic presidential primary February 15, 2028.
Many Democrats think the early primary will force presidential candidates to pay more attention to Hispanic and minority voters. Sen. Luján says the early date will put New Mexico into the national political spotlight.
“It means that those that are running for President are going to have to learn of New Mexico’s needs and values,” said Luján . “I’m just really proud of what New Mexico has done and what we’re going to teach others everything we’re doing in this beautiful state.”
Other prominent national names attending Saturday’s event included Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Arizona), former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Maryland).
