New Mexico Brewers Guild’s newest pint glass celebrates 100 years of Zozobra

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The New Mexico Brewers Guild‘s annual pint glass fundraiser has a twist this year with the incorporation of the New Mexico-based mythological creature Zozobra, also known as Old Man Gloom.

The New Mexico Brewers Guild collaborated on the glass with the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe, which produces the annual Zozobra burning and is celebrating 100 years of Old Man Gloom. “This year being Zozobra, I think these are going to go pretty quickly,” Ebbie Edmonston, executive director of New Mexico Brewers Guild, said about the pint glass.

The glass features Zozobra’s face and the fire that he breathes and eventually engulfs him. Zozobra’s gloomies, which resemble little ghosts, are also pictured on the glass along with the beer-making ingredients of hops and wheat.

This year, the New Mexico Brewers Guild held a contest for artists and selected Syd Linkletter of Corrales to design the Zozobra-themed pint glass. “Every pint glass sold is going to give one dollar towards the guild. So it’s a fundraiser for us. We will also take a portion of the proceeds and give it to the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe,” Edmonston explained.

The New Mexico Brewers Guild is a nonprofit organization and will use the money to carry out its goal to “promote, protect, and preserve the New Mexico craft beer industry through education, awareness, and community,” said Edmonston.

Over the past three years, the guild picked New Mexico animals to be featured on the glasses. “The first year was a fossil that was found in New Mexico. The second year was the black bear, which Smokey Bear is based off of. And then last year was the cutthroat trout, which is a New Mexico state fish. So we wanted to keep it as New Mexican as possible,” Edmonston said.

The limited-edition Zozobra glassware costs $7 and will be sold at select breweries in New Mexico starting on June 26. Participating breweries are listed below:
