Morgan Wallen’s concert in Pittsburgh Saturday was canceled due to “adverse weather” that, by the concert’s scheduled start time, never arrived in the area.
The country singer performed Friday night at Pittsburgh’s Acrisure Stadium, but on Saturday afternoon, Wallen announced via social media that the following night’s concert was called off. “After talking with local officials and my team, there is no choice but to cancel tonight’s show due to severe adverse weather conditions expected throughout the rest of the day and night,” Wallen wrote. “Safety for my fans and crew is the highest priority.
However, by Saturday night, the forewarned “adverse weather” stayed south of the city, only peppering the Pittsburgh area with a light rain, TribLive reported. The unexpected good weather forced Wallen back onto social media Saturday night to explain why the concert was canceled.
“This morning, my team walked on my bus, told me that they had been consulting with local officials, and that I should cancel my show in Pittsburgh (Saturday night). And I said, why? They said that there was gonna be strong winds in the area, and I said OK. So that’s what I did,” Wallen said in his Instagram stories. “And that was the information I had in the moment, and I trusted my team. I understand that that wind and whatever else hasn’t gotten to Pittsburgh yet. I know it has touched some of Pennsylvania so my heart goes out to all those affected by it.”
Wallen continued, “But the truth of the matter is, I have a large stage and in those conditions, it could become fatal to a lot of folks around it. So I did the best I could with the information I had in that moment.”
The singer’s late-night Instagram Story was also in response to fans’ theories about the cancelation and whether it was in connection to an incident that happened at Friday’s show, where Wallen grabbed a cellphone belonging to a security guard who was filming the concert and then angrily threw the device into the audience:
Wallen also had an incident at a recent gig in Denver where he took out his frustrations on his piano, but assured fans after the show that the instrument “is working.”
“I’ve been seeing a lot of nonsense about me that is simply not true, and I just wanted to clear the air,” Wallen said Saturday night of the rumors. “I think my true fans know that that’s not how I operate in general, but I had to say it.”
Wallen is next scheduled to perform June 19 at Chicago’s Soldier Field, weather permitting.
