Morgan Wallen’s Dad Talks About His ‘Sobriety’ + Fatherhood

Date:

Morgan Wallen‘s always kept his personal life, including the evolution of his partying habits and his relationship with his 5-year-old son Indie, pretty close to the chest.

He has opened up enough to let on that he’s been through major growth in both areas.

A new episode of the singer’s SiriusXM radio show reflects that, by way of an appearance from his dad, Tommy Wallen. Tommy shared a personal statement about Wallen in one segment of the show.

“Something that doesn’t relate to music or Morgan’s music that makes me really proud, again, there’s no question about this answer also: It’s his sobriety and the dad he’s become,” Tommy said (quote via Holler.)

That echoes some of the same sentiments that Tommy expressed in a letter he penned for Wallen’s I’m the Problem zine earlier this year, where he wrote that he was proud of the way his son took accountability for and addressed the mistakes he’d made in his life.

Is Morgan Wallen Sober?

Wallen has never straightforwardly said so. But it’s not a huge surprise to hear his father use the word “sobriety” to talk about the singer’s journey.

The singer said last year that he hasn’t been to a bar since he was arrested for throwing a chair off Eric Church’s Chief’s in downtown Nashville in April 2024. Wallen said it was “definitely the best thing for me” to avoid the bar scene, and that he leaned into hunting and other outdoor pursuits instead.

At a show earlier this month, he also spoke about how his song “I Got Better” was inspired by “a serious time in my life when I felt like there was one thing I had to get rid of in order for my life to be OK again.”

He didn’t get more specific than that, though he did add that he hopes fans will relate for any person, thing or situation that makes them feel “captive” in their own lives.

What Is Morgan Wallen’s Life Like With His Son, Indie?

Wallen shares 5-year-old Indie with his ex-fiancée KT Smith.

His I’m the Problem album includes a song called “Superman,” which Wallen wrote as a letter to Indie.

Its lyrics acknowledge the mistakes he’s made, specifically imagining a day in the future when his son will be old enough to read news stories about his dad’s scandals and see a picture of his mugshot.

Also in 2025, Wallen said he and Indie have bonded over listening to his unreleased music, and that fatherhood “just gets better and better” as Indie grows.

Timeline of Morgan Wallen Controversies + Accomplishments

Morgan Wallen has been arrested, banned and booted throughout a career that’s not even 10 years old. He’s also been celebrated, praised and awarded a few of country music’s highest honors.
