Monsoon storms and more heat ahead

Hit and miss monsoon storms this weekend with hotter temperatures returning next week

Abundant monsoon moisture provides chances for thunderstorms this weekend. Pockets of heavy rainfall and flooding will be possible. Best chances for rain will be from the Central Mountains into eastern New Mexico.

Albuquerque’s best chance for rain will be Sunday afternoon and evening. Always avoid arroyos, ditches, and water-covered roads. And if flooding threatens, get to higher ground immediately.

Gusty canyon winds are also likely for Albuquerque Sunday evening. Rain chances back off next week as the heat dome returns.

Temperatures will hover slightly above average through the weekend but climb to well-above average and challenge record highs next week. Albuquerque will experience high temperatures reaching back into the mid- and upper-90s Tuesday into Wednesday of next week.

Smoke from wildfires will continue to pose a concern for air quality through the week as well. The most likely areas impacted will be across northern New Mexico. Remember if visibility drops in smoke, sensitive groups should limit outdoor activities.
