Mississippi, Alaska Senate races still too close to call

Date:

Several races in the 2026 midterms that have yet to be called could potentially further Democrats’ critical majorities in Congress.

WASHINGTON —

Days after Democrats achieved historic victories in the 2026 midterm elections, two Senate races in Mississippi and Alaska remain too close to call, with thousands of votes still to be counted — a stunning twist for two states President Donald Trump won by double digits in 2024.

In Alaska, Democrat Mary Peltola leads Republican Dan Sullivan by over 600 votes, with thousands of ballots uncounted.

In Mississippi, Democrat Scott Colom leads Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith by nearly 2,500 votes. Election officials estimate that approximately 30,000 votes remain outstanding, though that number could change due to Mississippi’s decentralized vote-counting process. Counties in the state are not required to report their certified results until 10 days after the election, meaning official results may not be available until late next week.

Both campaigns in Mississippi are preparing for a potentially lengthy process.

“We are not backing down. This election is not over,” a social media post from Hyde-Smith read. “Our team is working across Mississippi to monitor the remaining ballots and protect the integrity of the process. We will see this through to the very end.”

Colom said he is also preparing for a potential legal battle.

“It’s not about her, it’s not about the Republican Party. It’s about the people of Mississippi. It’s clear they’ve chosen to go into a new direction. If they want to litigate, we got an army of lawyers ready to protect the process, protect the integrity of the decision the voters made on Nov. 3,” Colom said in an interview. “If she thinks that she has a path to victory, she needs to get in front of a television and explain how she has a path to victory.”
