Man arrested in Gallup for shooting, killing roommate, state police say

MCKINLEY COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico State Police arrested a man accused of killing his roommate in Gallup on Friday.

Police said Henry McCarthy, 36, shot Antonio Nez, 52, inside a home on NM-264 near Alma Drive. Officials said McCarthy and Nez were drinking alcohol on June 13 before being involved in a verbal altercation.

At some point, McCarthy fired at least one round, hitting Nez. McKinley County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the home and found Nez with injuries to his head, and McCarty was found lying underneath a blanket.

Deputies also saw a rifle in the bedroom where the two men were located. McCarthy was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and unlawfully and knowingly discharging a firearm at a dwelling or occupied building, state police said.
