Lincoln County man charged after alleged assault on deputies

Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man after a welfare check on Saturday afternoon led to a standoff. LCSO in a press release said deputies went to the 200 block of Ski Run Road, where a woman said she had been unable to contact her spouse, Charles Strong, and was concerned he might be having a medical emergency.Deputies knocked on the outside of an outbuilding, but got no response. While they tried to open a side door, Strong fired two shots with what was later determined to be an air rifle, and the deputies retreated to a safe position to wait for the arrival of more law enforcement, the release said. New Mexico State Police closed State Road 532 to non-essential vehicles traveling in the area, and a drone was launched to monitor the outbuilding while deputies tried to get Strong to come outside. Deputies say when they tried to make contact, Strong fired two shots at them.According to the sheriff’s office, deputies later used drones, less-lethal munitions, and CS gas before taking Strong into custody without further incident. Strong was taken to the Lincoln County Medical Center for decontamination and medical clearance, then was booked into the Lincoln County Detention Center.Strong was taken for medical clearance and then booked into the Lincoln County Detention Center. He is charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and resisting arrest.
