A team of lifeguards’ rapid response to an emergency on June 23 saved a child’s life, earning recognition from the county board of commissioners, a Bernalillo County news release said.On duty at the South Valley Aquatic Center, lifeguard Logan Sanchez was the first to jump into the pool to remove the child, who appeared to be unconscious.Pool manager Melannie Hernandez led a coordinated effort in which head guards Edgar Pavia Garcia and Anthony Montoya, along with lifeguards Joshua Lovat and Japhet Beltran Larios, administered lifesaving measures until the child regained consciousness.Also recognized for their contributions were aquatic team members Sophia Martinez, Ian Toledo, Lucas Toledo and Xavier Olivares.”This incident is a reminder that the real heroes are the ones we encounter every day who take their responsibility to their neighbors and their community seriously,” said Bernalillo County Commissioner Frank Baca.Some of the lifeguards, who have worked at public pools in Bernalillo County for one to seven years, intend to pursue careers in health care, emergency response, skilled trades and community leadership.
