“We’re gonna get through it,” said the vocalist, who is battling a rare blood cancer
Lady A’s Charles Kelley says he has been diagnosed with blood cancer. The singer shared the news via an Instagram post on the page of his wife, Cassie Kelley, explaining that he’d seen a doctor for rib fractures, which prompted a series of blood tests that discovered a rare cancer called multiple myeloma.
“I’m young, I feel healthy and the treatments, I will say, have just come so far even in the past five years, even life expectancy far exceeds what it used to be,” Kelley said, who added he also has a friend navigating the same diagnosis. “Just getting this off your chest is so freeing and takes the power away from it a little bit,” he continued, discussing how impactful it has been for him to also share his recent sobriety journey openly with fans. “We’re gonna get through it.”
Kelley has been working on multiple music projects of late: a new album with Lady A, a set of Christmas shows, and a yacht rock radio show on SiriusXM called “Y’all Aboard.” In the video, Kelley said he still plans to continue with the projects as he heads through the first six months of treatment. “I’ll have tough days, but I want to keep working,” he said. “I need to be happy and doing what I love to do, and spending and soaking up as much time with my family as well. I’m hopeful, I really am.”
Lady A — the Grammy-winning trio of Kelley, Hillary Scott, and Dave Haywood — are set to launch their This Winter’s Night Tour in December.
