Friday’s Five Facts

[1] APD releases details on police shooting that left suspect dead – APD released details on a police shooting in April that left a suspect dead. Police spotted 25-year-old Adriana Gonzales and 30-year-old Mark Benavidez at the Walmart off Wyoming and Menaul. The two were suspected of being involved in multiple armed robberies. Gonzales was arrested without incident, but a scuffle broke out between Benavidez and officers when they tried to arrest him. At one point Benavidez is able to grab an officer’s rifle and fire multiple rounds. Two other officers shot and killed Benavidez. No officers or civilians were injured.

[2] Los Ranchos development primed for court battle – The $50 million “Village Center” in Los Ranchos may be up in the air based on the latest move from the village government. Los Ranchos Village trustees voted two to one Wednesday night to file a court injunction against the public-private project which that same government body green-lighted years ago. Earlier this month, a Bernalillo County District Court judge ruled that prior Los Ranchos city officials broke state open meetings law in 2022 when the village approved the project without a public meeting. The project has faced opposition since the groundbreaking in 2022.

[3] Severe storms in eastern New Mexico into the weekend – Skies will be mostly sunny through midday, with increasing clouds during the afternoon in the mountains. Storms will develop along the central mountain chain during the early afternoon, and move eastward toward Texas. A few storms will become severe, especially in the northeast highlands, with a chance for damaging wind, large hail and a tornado. Saturday will be very similar, with an even higher risk of severe storms in all of eastern New Mexico. The Rio Grande Valley and west will stay drier and sunnier.

[4] Pueblo of Sandia opens new fire station, EMS facility – The Pueblo of Sandia is celebrating the opening of a new fire station and EMS facility. The new fire station is about 11,000 square feet and the Sandia Pueblo will work with the Bernalillo County Fire Department. Prior to the opening, the pueblo depended on outside entities to provide fire and EMS services.

[5] A look at the ‘secret tunnel’ under the Sunport – A tunnel below the Sunport opened to airport visitors in 1965 but has been sitting quietly since the 80s. The passageway once connected two separate terminal buildings, now it’s used for maintenance. The tunnel also features two areas where artisans sold jewelry and pottery. The walls are lined with 16 mosaics comprised of thousands of one-inch tile squares. The Sunport said its current terminal remodeling project won’t have any impact on the tunnel art either.
